One thing I think could be useful would be the ability to choose where to save the database. iGTD does that and that allowed me to have a synched DB between home and work with the help from Dropbox.
You can do the exact same thing with The Hit List. Quote from The Hit List Google Group:
I just discovered a very simple way to set up THL on 2 computers (as
in the common case of a work and home computer).
You must first have Dropbox (or the equivalent) set up on the 2
computers. Go to getdropbox.com to set up a free Dropbox account. If
you don't know, Dropbox is a free service that allows you to set up a
web-based file storage account (cloud) which is monitored on 2
computers (or more) you set it up on. If you move the data file from
its normal location to Dropbox, when you open THL on either computer
you will see the most recent data.
The data file is (by default) named The Hit List Library.thllibrary
and is located under /Users/username/Library/Application Support/The
Hit List. You just move this file to the Dropbox folder. After
moving you will have to specify the new location by holding the alt/
option key down while opening THL. This will cause a window to open
which says "Choose The Hit List Library", click on the button "Choose
Library..." and navigate to The Hit List Library.thlibrary at the new
location under Dropbox. Holding down the alt/option key when opening
THL is also how you create more that one library (data base).

Yes, they have, and yes, there is - they've even saved a spot in Preferences for it - but they haven't given a release time frame. I've read a couple of statements from the developer and he sounds very committed to making it kickass, though.

First thing - wait a bit, try 5 or 6 times in the next couple of hours. It's probably a "server too busy" response.
If that still doesn't work, post a message in the support forum for THL - it's a link immediately below your "Download" button on the receipt.

Make sure you didn't accidentally copy any spaces at the end of the registration number. I did that the first time I copied the number and pasted it into the registration window.

Yes. Andy is working on an iPhone version as well. THL is technically still in beta right now, so I don't know when the iPhone app will be out.
How exactly are Process (loot app) and THL different?
They both seem to be GTD apps that are pretty much the same.
It's all about interface. THL is chock full of keyboard shortcuts that make arranging large numbers of tasks quick and easy, especially for keyboard-heavy users who are used to using programs like Quicksilver. THL also has a lot less visual clutter than Process, in my opinion. Process has a lot of customability in terms of fonts, colors, labels, but that leads to an uglier program in my opinion. Process seems to do a better job of linking documents, mp3s, videos etc. to tasks, using a separate pane to show the contents of the media. I think I am going to use THL for all my repeating, minor tasks and Process for more detailed project management.

Sounds like a great workflow that will for me too. Thanks for the suggestion. ![]()

It comes down to tag and context management, plus the Today and Upcoming views. Before getting THL I made a tag column in Process and tried to make smart folders that would only show tasks with a certain string in it. At first it worked but after an update (I think) the tag column refuses to work as a filter now.
THL is much more appropriate for a GTD app. If you're only dealing with one context, or even one (large) project, then Process is probably better - especially since it has network sharing features.
I don't think they're mutually exclusive, you just have to think out which one is better for the task.

Dammit... I really like TheHitList. But since it has no possiblity to sync with toodledo I can't use it.
That sucks.
I actually was an avid Toodledo user as well. I find though that the interface is a double edged sword. The reason I chose toodledo was for the sheer amount of possibilities it provides. I even payed for a pro account for a few extra features.
With Toodledo you really can organize your to-do's so many different ways. Which is the same reason that I now think I'm moving away from Toodledo. While I still think it's a great service and think the devs are really responsive, I just feel overwhelmed with Toodledo. I've tried a few different organization methods and it took me a while to settle on one that worked. Then after that I guess I just find it takes me way too long enter my tasks into toodledo. I take advantage of using twitter to add tasks in a "sentence" like format, but sometimes it doesn't assign the contexts reliably. At any rate, I tend to rely on the website directly more often then not and the UI isn't the cleanest interface. Chocked full of options yes, but quickly entering a task, not necessarily.
I always shirked away from fully mac options as I work on a PC at work but figured I'd give The Hit List a spin, and I ended up really being won over. I'm a quicksilver junkie, so the sentence like input (auto tag with /, auto-context with @) and keyboard shortcuts really make it. On top of that, I'm a sucker for a well done Mac UI. I find that THL has just enough options to satisfy me but not so much that I'm overwhelmed. And on top of all that, it's so nice to just be able to highlight 10 tasks and drag them to a folder or tag and it's sorted in an instant (rather than changing them one by one or having to use a search function to batch change them).
To end my rant, I still appreciate Toodledo completely and I'd love to see integration between the two. Currently I'm using logmein while at work to access THL on my mac at home, so a web solution would be very welcome. But I'm really pleased with THL.

I have synced my tasks from toodledo to ical's 'To-Do' list/pane (using the subscribe functionality in ical).
Can anyone give me a step-by-step on how to sync my ical 'To-Do' pane with THL?
Appreciated,
/Brian

I should add that the iCal Tasks (which is represented as a subscribed calendar in iCal) is not appearing in THL's sync window.

You can't sync with subscribed calendars, only local calendars. I think this might be an iCal/iSync limitation and not just a THL limitation though, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone explain the difference between / and @ tags? I dont quite get it ...
/tags are more informational about the topic of the task (e.g. /Work or /Billing)
@ tags are more for place or subject, such as where the task will be done (e.g. @home or @store or @online).
Check out the The Hit List User Group. I found it to be very useful.

Thanks, I spent ages tearing my hair out trying to get that to work. I was hoping to be able to sync my Outlook 2003 on my PC with a good task tool on my Mac. Sound easy? Here is my chain so far...
Outlook->Toodledo->Ical
I was hoping for
Outlook->Toodledo->Ical->THL
but I guess that is not possible. Is there any way to have a 2-way sync between Toodledo and THL?
Many thanks,

But where do I begin with this App? Right now, my "To Do" list is a combination of iCal events and iCal/Mail To Do Items.
I have THL open, and I am staring at a blank canvas. I have to assume that someone out there is like me and handles did handle their to do items the way I currently do. How did you migrate over to THL?

I've been a die-hard Things user for several months, and I tried the demo of The Hit List before it was unlocked, and it didn't do it for me. It felt like trying to carry armfuls of clipboards up stairs.
Then I opened it again last night and noticed that it syncs to-dos nicely from Mail.app. So I started playing with it, and all that looseness was suddenly really appealing. I shifted everything over to The Hit List, appreciating all the easy-to-remember keyboard shortcuts, and now I'm completely hooked.
I pine for an iPhone client.

I was able to drag my tasks over from Things! Talk about easy. You can drag URLs into the dock icon, but really, the quickest way to get started is to create a new list for one of your projects, hit Return and start writing yourself lists of tasks. (Your existing iCal/Mail tasks should already appear in THL's inbox.)
There should be a tutorial list in the app already. It doesn't take long to get through, but it quickly gets you accustomed to how THL works.
You set up synchronisation in the Preferences pane. Basically, you link your Hit List tags to various calendars in iCal. (Tags are created as you use them.)
A particularly fun way to create a to-do that I've discovered is just to highlight any text in Mail.app, right-click, choose "New To-Do", and one gets created right at the top of the message, and appears in The Hit List's inbox. (Though I've noticed that the link between them seems to get broken if I change or move the to-do in THL).
Sorry, long, non-specific answer. The upshot is: "Play with it".

I assume the "Learn the Hit List" tasks are there for you. Go through them and learn how to use the program. Beyond that, you'll probably just have to re-enter your tasks into The Hit List. Once you've done that, you can sync with iCal and you'll be able to see your tasks in both places.

Yeah, I have gone through the Learn the Hit List items. I know how to use the program generally. But I think you might have answered my question. There seems to be no way to import iCal To Do Items into THL (i.e., syncing is only a one way street). I have a bunch of To Do Items -- but if having to do it by hand is the way I need to do it, so be it.

Have you guys tried "luke"/"skywalker"/"darth vader"/"star wars" or "super mario"/"mario"? Try writing them in a task and complete the task (sound on!) and then archive them... Haha..
I'm not having that problem ... a screenshot might be helpful (of the list where the task actually does show up.)
You know what it is. If you don't put a start date and you have something due tomorrow, it bolds it. But if you put a start date of tomorrow and a due date of tomorrow, it won't bold it until literally tomorrow. I guess it thinks if you don't put a start date for something due tomorrow, it assumes within 24 hours or something??
If you are so inclined, you can follow me on Twitter
I see. Yeah, it only bolds things that need to be worked on today. If you have told the program it doesn't need to be worked on until tomorrow, it doesn't see the need to bold it for you. But if you put no start date, it assumes that you can start it anytime, including today, so it will bold it.

Really liking The Hit List. I bought Things after gubb.net crapped out on me a couple of months ago, and thought that was great, but THL really fits my schtick better.
Do you know if the MacHeist license will be valid if THL becomes 1.0?
I'm really so impressed I can imagine switching from Things to THL. Unfortunately
I got an iPod touch the other day, I thought buying Thing's iPhone/touch version, but now.....

Another user over at the Google group for THL had been using it to keep track of his advances in Super Mario (or something like that) and apparently was shocked when he ticked a task and the music came. I initially thought he was joking, but he was right! Then I just thought that if he'd done Mario, surely he's done Star Wars as well... That's the story.. haha. Haven't found any others yet though.
Great app. ... although it makes me want to hit it.
I find out how much work I really have to do each day, and then get frustrated that I don't meet my own deadlines. urggh.

Ooooooooh... I didn't really get this when I looked at the synching options. But this is perfect. The fact that this app can work with Mail and iCal to-dos and calendars makes it 100 times more useful to me. I've never really thought about using a GTD app but I'm making an effort to take bits of information from various unorganized places and get them into this app, and I'm just barely starting to get a grasp on how to make the best use of it.

Great, isn't it? That's what made me give this app a second look: I like anything that works well with what's already built-in. It took a bit of mental adjustment, but now The Hit List seems the most obvious, unobtrusive way to organise my projects.
