What type of contexts and tags are you guys using to help organize things?

Can anyone tell me if you can manually sort in Today?  I am sitting looking at about 40 things to do (yes I need to get on with it!) listed in Today, but the order they show in isn't really very helpful?  I feel like I'm missing something, I thought manual sorting via drag n drop was possible in THL, and what I want to do is manually sort them into the order I want to do them in.  But I can't!  Help??!!

Thanks

Nicola

You can manually sort tasks in the Today window by due date, but you can't put something that's due today before something that's past due, for example. If you have 10 tasks due today and 10 tomorrow, you can sort those groups separately but you can't mix tasks due today and tomorrow.

if they need to be in a certain order this can only happen if you have little projects (that consist of at least two tasks). You can sort them within the projects.
I hope I am congruent with the GTD!-terms here. Single tasks are always independent from each other, thus you need not to sort them on your list.

e.g. you have

- bring the bin to the garbage outside.
- through used tissue in the bin
- open the door

as single tasks and want to sort them, it won´t work.
the tasks are connected to each other. thus you should create a project.

-clean up
   - through used tissue in the bin
   - open the door
   - bring the bin to the garbage outside.

where you can sort the tasks within it.

Here are some examples of how I have my lists and contexts setup right now.  I am using my contexts as "where" and tags as "what" (such as what programs to use or whatever)

Personally, I've switched back to Things. The lack of an iPhone client kept getting in the way of my productivity: a lot of "to-do" ideas and discussions come up when I'm not at my computer.

Now that I have, I'm appreciating the calm simplicity of Things. It's kinda silly, but the feature I miss most about The Hit List is the little tone that acknowledges when a ticky-box has been checked.

I'm sticking with Things, myself.
THL just doesn't sit right with me.  Feels like one of those apps where it was easy to take a template and try and improve on it with hits and misses in design.

I wish them all the best, though, I just like Things.
It was a nice bundle app for sure.

I was thinking of how they could make this task manager better after they get the iPhone app done and I though that reports would be a nice feature.  How fast you get tasks done from when you add them, avg. time a task in left undone.  Stuff like that so you can see how productive you are on certain days or weeks.  Just some ideas, anyways I want my iPhone app SOOOON.

I'm using The Hit List every day for my to do list, but I have a problem:
the application doesn't show me the dock count after the first mac boot of the day.
The hit list auto-starts at login, if the start or the re-start isn't the first of the day no problem and on the dock icon I can see the count of the "today" to do's, but if the start is the first of a new day the count doesn't appear on the icon. Of course if I close and re-open the program the count then appairs!

The problem exists with repetitive to do's too...

Removing the auto-start at login and starting The Hit List delayed with launchd the problem persists.

Can you help me?
Thanks
Andrea

Hopefully after we get the new iPhone 3.0 software out this wednesday we will see the HitList iphone app within a few weeks.  That is what I am hoping and betting on.  Also I would like to see the moneywell app come out soon after this 3.0 release.  I hope we have a large influx of apps that we have all been waiting on come out around this 3.0 launch time.

The developer is terrible at communicating -- not even a mention of whether he's even started into the iphone app!  Seems like people are leaving THL by the droves.  What a shame, too, since it is probably the best GTD app with keyboard shortcuts out there.

I tried to open The Hit List today but a dialogue box popped up and said the Beta version had expired.  Does this mean that we did not get a permanent version of this app.  ??

It just means you have to download the updated version. It will still work.

I don't know why they wouldn't just write Sparkle into that, but m'eh.

You can make it check for updates on startup in the preferences. I think it even is sparkle but why know why people don´t to that first I can not explain wink

You can do it if your beta isn't "expired". Which is silly. If it's expired, Sparkle is the only thing it should allow.

The Hit List is still on beta, so you just have to download the last version from the Potion Factory website and you'll be up and running (if I remember correctly, this is what I did).

No password is needed until the official 1.0 version is released. The license you got from MacHeist will be valid for all the 1.XX updates.

Welcome to the Mac! Unfortunately, if you missed the MacHeist 3 bundle sale you'd have to run over to the Potion Factory (http://www.potionfactory.com/thehitlist/) to buy a copy, or you can root around in the Giveaway thread (http://www.macheist.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6631) or the Apps for Sale/Trade thread (http://www.macheist.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=12972), sometime you'll find a generous MacHeister who may sell (or give you) a copy they aren't using.

And welcome to the MacHeist forums.

Ok, here I go.  I dont want to sound like I am an impatient person but I am done waiting on this app.  I am going back to school within 2 weeks and need to have a functional GTD system for my computer and iPhone.  The lack of iPhone support for THL is its downfall for me.  Plus the lack of feedback from the dev. about anything that is going on with the app.

So now for my question.  What are my alternatives?  Things with the iPhone app.  OmniFoucs and the Iphone app.  Anything else that you all use?  Thanks.

I use the web based ToodleDo and then on my iphone use ToDo.  It's not all perfect but works good enough for me.  ToDo also works with RememberTheMilk.  ToodleDo is free while RememberTheMilk requires a yearly fee. ToDo also offers a sync component to sync with ical but I've not explored that yet.

Ok, I bought Todo by Appigo.  I have a few different calenders in iCal that Todo sorts as lists.  Then I have my lists in THL going to those calenders and all the tasks get synced to them from the built in THL ical sync.  Then I am using the Appigo Sync that sync the ical todo list with my iPhone Todo app.  It works remarkably well for just setting it up.  The only thing that it does not sync with is the subtasks from THL.  You can set up projects in both but they will just show up as individual tasks in the other programs.

Having been pretty vocal about The Potion Factory hurrying up with the iPhone app I'd love to be 1 of the 10, but seeing as the hunt for beta testers is on blogs & news sites all over the net the cahnces are slim to say the least.

I'm not a diverse user who's found some innovative way to use it, but my ToDo scheduling is important to me and I desperately need a workable solution 2.

One thing I'm very concerned about with this announcement...

10 Beta Testers?  10?....  10?.... I'm just saying..... <end of MacOSKen impression>

For something as complex as this, with the variety of ways it can be used you'd think they'd want a substantial number of testers to cover all of these imaginative usage methods?  Unless of course it's still early days in the development of the app.

BigMark, I have my doubts that it's only 10 that are testing it but that is the number of people they are requesting from outside their own circle.  We don't know who or how many are within that circle.

Bummer.  I've been waiting on THL.  I've been using Circus Ponies Notebook and exporting to CarbonFin to manually sync my to-do lists between my Mac and iPod Touch. Not a smooth solution.

Time, how short.
