What do you want to see in MacHeist 4?
Since the new bundle is out and most MacHeist members have bought it, I think it's time to start thinking about what we would like to see in the MacHeist 4 bundle. Since this will be released after Snow Leopard, don't exclude any apps you already have, since they won't working in 10.6 (Pretty sure).
I would like a single license for Sophos AntiVirus to use on my MacBook Pro. I don't want to give any viruses to my Windows friends on accident.
I'd also like to see LittleSnapper in Snow Leopard.
Note: I changed the title so we know which MH4 thread is which. -the WB.

Only unsupported system hacks should stop working between OS versions. any legitimate app will keep working until either a) apis are deprecated and then removed without the app being updated or b) OS 11 is released.

I'm with semicolons, now that we are in the Intel age, I think backwards compatibility will be much better. That is something programmers have learned, game console makers (even Nintendo) have learned.
Selling a product that doesn't go forward a few generations is only asking you to be knocked out by the competitor's product that does.

Any assumption we are staying with new Macs having Intel chips is just that, an assumption.
Decisions on what will be in MacHeist 4 will not be made right now, we don't even know what will be in development by then. Many of the apps people were making big noises about in December didn't exist a year ago. LittleSnapper wasn't in big development this time last year, and I'm sure MacHeist didn't know of Realmac's intentions to build such an app. We certainly didn't. Realmac were busy developing RapidWeaver 4.
I'll make suggestions when I get an idea what's coming near the end of the year!

I'd like to see more general purpose apps and utilities. Not too many games (I think they got it right this year, just one game, or two max.) More along the lines of MH2, I guess, with more universal appeal. I would not like to see any more image editors, or web development or media production software.

I like utilities also, but 1)they are not typically the type of high cost applications that MacHeist likes in the main bundle, and 2)there were many utilities in the loot this year - Fresh, Blast, Typinator, HyperSpaces, Overflow, Sticky Notes, AllSecure, Webbla, KavaTunes, MacDust, even arguably ShoveBox, Process, and DevonThink.

I agree, even though I own DIskWarrior and TechTool Pro, and I feel the same way about VMWare Fusion, any of them would ne great additions to a future bundle.

I agree, there've been a lot of image editors and the like, and since I'm not a web designer, or a developer, or a media aficionado in general, I would definitely be interested in seeing more apps with universal appeal. Besides, I now have 3-4 image editing apps, just from Macheist! I don't need anymore, not that I'm complaining, not at all, but just pointing it out.

Idea: Maybe have different bundles that cater to people's different needs. I can imagine different themes like a gaming bundle, a music-lover bundle, an iPhone user bundle, etc. Of course each would have to probably be much cheaper than what we offer now, and perhaps there could be a combined "Mother-of-all-bundles"
Now that I think about it, this seems like Vista and its versions.

I think this Machiest III showed that people behind it need to think again about whole process of choosing apps. I think injecting a little bit of democracy from the Macheist community that makes probably significant portion of total sale is important.
How it should be done is up to Macheist moderators. But I think having a structured system to choose type of apps users want is very helpful. Machesit people have shown that they are good at making a good system, so why not they make one for choosing at least the apps types? (notice that I don't mean the exact app, but the categories that they belong to, although it is not a bad idea to have that opportunity too)
It can be like a election that the result unveils at the end.

I think that probably becomes way too hard to negotiate and put together, and you wouldn't have the same numbers for each bundle like you get with a single main bundle. Sometimes too much choice isn't a good thing either.
I think they've done a pretty good job. I missed MH1, but I would have bought it if I knew about it. When I heard about MH2, I bought immediately. This year it does seem a bit too specialized for me, so I might not get it. But you can't please everyone all the time. I'll definitely be here next year to see what MH4 looks like.
I do think, though, it's probably a good idea to limit it to just a couple super-specialized apps and try to keep it more general. But if you do it every year, I guess you run out of apps after awhile.

It's not that easy.
First, there's the issue of approaching developers. While the past two years have done a lot to reduce developer anxiety regarding bundles, some might simply not be interested for their own reasons. Second, there's the issue of dupes. Who'll buy the MH4 bundle if it has a bunch of apps that have already been featured in an MUPromo Bundle, GiveGoodFoodToYourMac, or any of the other bundles popping up? Who would buy it if they already have a glut of graphics apps, GTD apps, and "Everything Bucket" apps from previous bundles?
MH2 was a great example. It was painful seeing the app request thread filled with people (or a whole bunch of 4000 bleating lambs, as Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation would say) endlessly calling out for Coda and/or CandyBar, and/or Transmit, or just about anything from Panic Inc., completely ignoring the reasons why Panic would likely never be in bundle like this.
Sigh. It reminds me of the GOG.com forums where people have polluted the game request voting system with spurious requests for things like Far Cry 2 and Diablo III.

Yes, it's difficult to put together, and I trust them to do it as well as possible, trying to have votes isn't likely to work. However, I don't think they should worry too much about duplicates from *other* bundles. Most people have probably only ever bought a bundle from macheist, I believe the other bundles have much less exposure and much less sales. (I have never bought any other bundles, myself.) Even having maybe one or two duplicates from MH1 would probably be fine, since the apps have new updates, or people just never bought MH1.

Geez - I disagree with the fundamental question/comment here. No it is not time to be thinking MH4. MH3 is not over! While the bundle has been revealed, all is not complete and wrapped up. So if an app exists and might work with MH, there is still hope over the next 8 days.
Secondly - like was said above - many of the apps this year are new and were not on our radar this time last year. So there is almost a full year for Mac developers to device wondrous apps for us and time for some established ones to decide to try being a partner.
Really - just enjoy the ride. It's been a great one this year, and better than MH 2 which was also insanely great.

On that note, what'll likely happen with MH4 is that some of the loot apps will have "graduated" to full bundle status (like with MH2's apps last year) - the people asking for the full version of EventBox may very well get their wish come next year.
DEVONTech's also doing a full overhaul of their suite of apps for v2.0, so those are likely sure-fire bundle candidates too.

I'm sure by the time MacHeist 4 rolls around there will be a bunch of new things I'm dying to try out so I'll forgo listing apps I want now... However, I would like to see the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) as one of the charities in MacHeist 4.

Agreed, great idea for a charity. I wish they had included something this year for Gaza, but I guess they can't have everything.

I think that including apps that had featured in MacHeist I or II would be acceptable. Featuring apps that had previously been give-aways as part of any previous heist also seems fine to me, especially since those have tended to be version-limited. Additionally whilst I have referred several people I have never received even one referral related application, so including those in future bundles is also fine by me.
So long as there's a decent amount of new-blood in there it's all good IMHO.

I'd like MindNode Pro. At $15 I'll probably pick it up anyway but based on the free version it's a really good, straight forward tool for doing what it does (MindMaps).
OmniGraffle would be good too, and iShowU or another video screen capture app.
Two of those are actually pretty cheap things but that's part of what's good in bundles - things which would be useful but aren't critical and so don't necessarily justify putting your hand in your pocket.

Particularly MH1 - MH1 sold, what, roughly 20,000 bundles. MH2 did 50,000 and MH3 will likely do more still. Even if something was in MH1 then there are going to be a lot of people who don't have it - and that's ignoring people who might want an upgrade.
