Just received the TC (the new 2009 version) today and am in the process of setting it up. I intend to use it both as a hard drive for back ups and a wireless point.
Just started using AirPort Utility and the screen asks me what i want to do with TC:
1. Create a new wireless network?
2. Replace an existing wireless router ?
3. TC to join the current network?
Pardon my ignorance but which one should i use? I want to take advantage of the dual band wireless feature as well as use it as a hard drive.
My isp is AOL and router is Netgear DG834. Once the TC has been configured and set up i will switch off the wireless function on the Netgear in order to use just the wireless feature on the TC. At the same time i dont want to have to reset the passwords etc in my devices that are already connected to the existing Netgear router.
Anyone can help please?
PS: For clarification the Netgear router is also a modem so i cant get rid of it physically altogether.
When Apple instructions mention network do they mean a bunch of computers conneting to the same router?
I have searched on the net about this issue but the only instructions i have found so far are for the earlier models of TC which were slightly different and had a different pattern of set up.
During my searches i noticed that people were mentioning choosing WPA instead WEP. I dont know if this is correct or the case. But i have also heard that WPA tends to create problems with Sony PS3 (incompatibility issue i think).

I would just go with the "Create a new wireless network" option. Then just set it up so it has the same network name, password and encryption as the netgear router. Just make sure you turn off the wireless in the netgear first so there aren't any conflicts. You shouldn't have to change any settings on other computers.
Orange you glad I didn't make a pun?
I just set my new Time Capsule up last night. I was using an Airport Express previously, and I just chose the "create a new wireless network" option, and re-configured all of my network settings on the TC.
Option 2 attempts to import all of the settings from your current router. Not sure if it needs to be another Airport device, or if it works with other 3rd party routers. I tested it out and it seemed to import my ISP settings, but I decided to back out and just start fresh.
Option 3 allows you to configure the TC as a device within your current network - extending your current setup, or as a WDS relay or remote base station. This is useful if your signal is weak or doesn't reach throughout your entire home, or if you want to use an Airport Express for AirTunes, for example.
I have a PS3 and the WPA/WPA2 security works perfectly with it.
Let me know if you have any other questions, as I just went through the same setup process you are going through.
Ok, i went through the setup process and its all set up and working fine. Now in order to disable the wireless settings of the Netgear router i have been told that i should only do this when Netgear is physically connected to the Mac with an ethernet cable. I only have one of those cables and it is connecting the TC and Netgear together. Could I unplug this cable temporarily from TC and connect it to my mac in order to disable Netgear's wireless setting? Or will this cause any kind of trouble?

If the TC is completely set up and ready to go, and connected to the modem via the WAN port, then your'e good to go. Just set your mac to talk to the TC instead of the modem (best way to do that is to have separate SSIDs on the modem and the TC). Then , when your'e talking to the net via the TC, log in to the modem and shut off the wireless.

I went through the set up process for TC through AirPort Utility and it says that TC is set up and functioning properly and the TC itself is showing the solid green light. I also set up Time Machine (weekly back ups through Time Machine Editor).
Forgive my ignorance but i dont know what SSIDs are and how can i have separate ones on the Netgear modem/router and TC.

SSID is the "network name".
In Airport Utility, under Airport->Base Stateion, it's called "Airport Extreme Name" or "Time Capsule Name" (I only have Airport Extreme, but it's the same device, so the settings are the same)
When you select which network to connect to (in the airport chooser) the SSID is the name your'e selecting.

A few things i have noticed as well. TC and TM have not started the first backup yet. On the TM window says that it is due to start in half an hour. When i click on the TM icon on my dock a small window comes up which says : "The storage location for Time Machine Backups cant be found". Does this mean anything or does it simply show because the initial back up hasnt been performed yet? Or may i ask is there a way i can check if TC is backing up?
Through which app and how do i select which portions of my Mac's HD i want to back up?
When i open AirPort utility in order to change some of the settings of the TC i noticed in one of the windows it said that TC has been set up to connect using Ethernet (it says that i can change this setting if i wish to PPPoE). On the basic settings page of my Netgear router i noticed that it said that its Encapsulation is PPPoE. IS this ok or should i change the setting of TC to PPPoE?
Finally i intend to use TC to back up my PS3 and another windows pc. In order to do so do i need to partition the TC and if yes how do i do this?
Apologies for all these questions but this stuff is way too technical for me to understand clearly.
