Our internal alpha build does this and it should be released publicly soon.
TLAF, I am mightily impressed with the speed of your reply.
Thank you for listening to our feedback and making a great app even better : ) Looking forward to new RipIt release that has 'skipping over damaged area' feature.
I have been using RipIt for a solid 8 months or so and it has worked extremely well. It is definitely a go-to app on my system. Having said that, I tried the compression only once and, as TLAF mentioned, it was horribly slow. I fluctuate between DVDRemaster and HandBrake, so I don't really care. It will be a nice feature when it's working. Am I right in thinking that it only grabs the film? If so, that's the benefit of DVDRemaster, you can pick and choose what gets compressed.
Is there any particular advantage to using RipIt over something like Handbrake, save for the handful of cases in which one might want menus and other features intact?
RipIt is a ripper (which does a little transcoding) and Handbrake is a transcoder (which does a little ripping with VLC).
Tried it out on "Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl." The first time, I tried to use the compression feature and the program crashed just before completing. I then tried to do a rip with no compression, and that worked okay - but when I tried to use the resulting Video_TS file in Popcorn and FilmRedux, I got the message that there was still CSS copy protection which prevented me from compressing. I also tried VisualHub, and it immediately generated an error and wouldn't compress the file.
I'd but the bundle just for RipIt if it would work, but this initial test is discouraging.
As a first time user of Ripit, I was impressed with the results.
What I would like to see is options for other output formats, particularly .mp4. I use iMovie and that would allow me to edit films (such as add my own music) there.
Isn't that an option in the compression preferences?

This is odd behaviour. Could you contact our support team with details of the DVD including the ISBN please?
Not a bad little app. Sad that the Disc spin option slows my Macbook down to a crawl, but turning that preference off fixed the issue.
Compression option is still very buggy. Tried it on Zombieland and it failed about halfway through. Pity.

I sent in my info on "Pirates," and tried two other DVDs. "The 10th Kingdom" worked fine (and Mac the Ripper couldn't rip it), but "No Country For Old Men" again produced a watchable, full-sized file that couldn't be compressed because of CSS encryption. So while RipIt boasts 99.9999% success, so far I'm ony seeing 33% success (for my needs, at least - I can't really fill an iPod with movies that are 8 GB).
RipIt. Win. Simple. Makes the whole bundle worth it alone.
Haven't tried it yet, but I have a question. Can I burn the movies to another DVD if I wanted to later?

Yes. I doubt you can do the burning with RipIt (I haven't tried it yet either) but so long as RipIt rips the files properly and not in a restricting file made by RipIt (e.g how RealPlayer has .rmvb) then it should work perfectly when burning it onto another DVD.
It didn't rip my copy of Up
And I don't keep the dvd boxes (I hate them, take up unnecessary space) so I don't have the barcode to send to them. Oh well. Maybe it'll work with my other dvds.

I have a MacMini and I have never played a DVD on it. When I insert a DVD, DVD Player opens automatically and prompts me to set the region on the DVD drive. I don't want to do this. When I cancel the region prompt, the DVD is ejected so I can't use RipIt. If I leave the region prompt open, RipIt can have a go at the DVD. However when it finises it won't eject the DVD.
How can I avoid the region prompt displaying without setting a region?
I tried a compressed Rip but it seemed to fail very quickly (BBS The Documentary disc 1). I was then unable to restart a Rip of the same DVD (I wanted to try uncompressed). Why force me to eject?
Apparently, I'm on the green team
roughana : Just go to you System Preferences pane and click on "CD and DVD". The default setting is to launch DVD Player when you introduce a DVD disc. Change the setting in "what to do when introducing DVD Video disc" (last menu down the list), then change from "open with DVD Player" to "ignore".
And Peace of mind is back !

Kherberos's got your workaround, but I can't help but be curious... why don't you want to set your region?
You could also just update your firmware on the drive so it's region free...
I'd like to add my two cents:
Ripit does what it's famous for, ripping, fast and smoothly. But the compression is definitely beta. I ripped Syriana and after Ripit was done ripping and started the compression it crashed at 0.01%. I have an MBP with 2.5 Ghz Core 2 duo (late 2007), 4gb ram and Snow leopard (10.6.2).
However, this was a onetime try, I will try it again with this dvd and maybe some other ones.
Thank you Kherberos. That's great.
iDarbert: IMHO, in Australia DVD drives should be region free just like DVD players are after court case.
I have a lot of different region disks and don't want to get stuck with any one region.
NeostarNeko: I tried looking into making it region free but not actioned it yet. Do you have a recommended howto?
RipIt failed on the standard rip too for BBS Documentary disk 2. That's 0/2. Not a good start. Issue raised.

Just ripped 2 very, very recent releases successfully. Haven't watched them yet but spot checking them they look fine. I really like the simplicity. Regarding compression it just seems that people should avoid it until they get all the kinks worked out.
Hey guys,
I tried this app, and it crashes every time I use it. Real disappointing, as this was the main reason I bought the bundle.
Awesome! I used to have a PC and converted many movies. But this was the process: choose the file, then CONVERT FOR 5 HOURS. It took probably one whole week to get 30 movies done.
Now that I have a Mac, RipIt is EPIC. Easier than ever with the compressing feature.
Thanks TLAF, you make life SO MUCH easier!
Get a Mac.
Ripit looks like it could be good and is the main reason I bought the bundle. However I have been having issues with the compression feature. It turns all my DVDs into 4:3 ratio. I don't know if there is a way to stop this as there are no ratio settings in the preferences or anything, I'm selecting MP4 but there are no other options. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Until I can get the movies coming out correctly it's useless to me.

The compression feature is a beta feature so it will have some issues.
The good thing about MTR is that it's more of a configuration tool vs a one click app.
Ripit doesnt' take care of everything and if you were to go to the ripdifferent forums
you can find in short order the solutions to current rip problems.
you're stuck waiting until they update the ripit app to configure those titles. (months time)
Yeah ripit is nice for some titles.. but not all or everything.
Given the options MTR 4.o really does solve many issues and allows for problem free
duplication / backups of your purchased DVD's.
I would like to see MH work something out with the people of MTR
and offer that to all the heist members.

I'm quite confused as to what you just said... but it looked like ripit has the occasional bug. True, some DVDs don't rip properly, but the majority do. MTR... I cannot figure out what that is.
Ripit takes care of most things, and it can rip into a fair number of forms (The compression tool). So MTR (whatever that is) is free... but the people from Macheist should distribute it? I fail to see your logic, there.

jlschuma wrote:Why do no Disney movies work?
You must be trying to rip the copy protected movies. Try the public domain movies without copyright protection. Those should work great.
Uh, the point of the app is to rip copy protected movies.
Disney are the toughest ones, usually because they have something like 99 titles in the list, but only one is valid. You can play the DVD first with VLC and then see what title number is actually right, then select that one.
