Discuss RapidWeaver here, Realmac Software's flagship website creation app. (It's like iWeb, but better!)

Well, looks like I'm going to start the thread...
I'm looking for a good theme / plug in for a photo gallery. For a theme, I've had a look at Composition pro. It looks really nice. As for plugins, I've tried rapidalbum, but it keeps crashing on importing pictures. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to achieve nice galleries with lightbox effect? (I don't want to use a flash slideshow)

Check out the Collage plugin by YourHead. It's a little pricey at $14.95, but one of the best for what you're looking to do.

Thanks! It does look great. However, it seems a bit abandonned as it hasn't been updated since June '08!! :-(
Trust me, it's not. Isaiah is one of the more active RW plugin devs. I think there has not been an update, honestly, because there has not been a need for one. You can always email him at support and inquire further.

With RapidWeaver (and especially with Collage), make sure you aren'y dragging huge images in. Make them a sensible size for the web first, or you are storing up memory issues later down the line. We see people dragging 4MB images in which leaves RapidWeaver processing a huge amount realtime.
The RapidWeaver community is one of the best you'll find too. Make the most of it. ![]()

Aww... I missed it... however... question:
I'm not totally familiar with iWeb... so.. would RapidWeaver let me create a php / css "driven" website ? Or at least import a php / css template (or website) ? Any other WYSIWYG mac friendly web site creation tools "out there" for a reasonable price that will allow me to import my php / css website and re-design it ?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, there is no deal on the add-ons/themes that would have intersted me. But I'll keep an eye open ;-)

Thanks for the tip!
Well I had expected a lot more from RapidWeaver. To be honest I'm pretty disappointed. It is good for beginners who can't code, but not for experienced coders. The raw coding features are so basic, PSPAD and Aptana Studio are both better, and they are both completely free. (Although I think Aptana may not be anymore)
Oh well.
I Agree, being a long term hand coder it does feel a bit restricting.
In saying that, it does seem good for for those who know very little or no code at all and need a quick website.
I might have to look into building themes for it though.

I do like the way it handles projects though.
But, as someone who does a lot of CMS-theme related work, projects are not so much a help to me seeing as you're usually working with just one or two files.
Don't be put off by the simple interface, I was at first. Used it for over a year now and with the various plugins you can create some excellent websites, you don't have to use the framework or templates Rapidweaver gives you. Although some of them are good to experiment with at first.
Cartloom etc. gives you an easy commerce site with Paypal and credit card payments, digital delivery etc. and plugs straight into Rapidweaver.

Oh it's not the simple interface it's just the seemingly inefficient methods... I'll persevere with it and see if I like it after a bit more use.
When you get used to it, it simply builds you a website quicker than hand coding, even if it's more tricky to be very exact with stuff. It's like a payoff, a choice. I do both, and sometimes even use RapidWeaver to create content I then copy into an essentially hand coded site because it can save me a LOT of time.
Once you understand the theme system and format, coding skills are a big benefit, and you'll get even more from it.
Now Espresso has moved on nicely, RapidWeaver and Espresso are my 2 main tools for building sites.

Blocks and Stacks are your friends if you are frustrated with the restrictive nature of RW. There are a ton of different stacks out, ranging from audio and video to just about anything else you can dream up for content. Also, for those who know code and want to tear into theme templates and make larger alterations, check out RWThemeMiner and the beta release of Code Cutter from Varsis Studio.

A silly question, perhaps, but better safe than sorry: How does the Rapidweaver license work? Can I install the program on one machine and then deactivate and reinstall on another later?
EDIT: Oh, wait. Found my answer here: http://www.macheist.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17017 Sorry ![]()

Espresso and RW ftw.
I've been a web developer for almost 12 years now. I CAN hand code anything I need but I rarely do. For my own projects I use rapidweaver a LOT. If I am making an affiliate site with some content and a few links tossed in, I can create a beautiful, professional-looking site before lunch (and I don't even get out of bed until almost 10).
Guys like me have become "snooty" about what we are capable of doing. I've had other developers call me a newbie for using rapidweaver. Sure Coda or Espresso are more "powerful" but they can't churn out a site as fast as rapidweaver either. I have wife and a new baby. My time is precious to me so I don't squander it.
I've actually heard "I code everything by hand in vi/nano/notepad." Really? If that's true then you're a chucklehead. You may have the geek bragging rights but I have made tens of thousands of dollars with the sites I have built using rapidweaver and I did it infinitely quicker than you did. I win.
I like pie.

I spend the majority of my time building / extending web apps built on frameworks or writing custom modules / themes for CMS's. Now unless RapidWeaver has some sort of secret super powers that I don't know about, its going to be a hindrance rather than asset (if it does, please show me the path).
In saying that, I wouldn't consider calling someone a "newbie" for saving time using something like RapidWeaver and If I can make RapidWeaver save me time with small sites I definitely will! (I'll just have to put some effort learning how to make templates / plugins for it and quickly).

Most of my income is made from affiliate marketing. Those activities you mentioned aren't my bread and butter. If scripting were a big part of what I do, rapidweaver wouldn't be good for me.
Fortunately I love Coda too. I'm a Perl, PHP and Python junkie (I love Django) but it's a relatively small percentage of my income compared to kicking out small, targeted affiliate sites. I'm using the same basic template with different header images so I don't bother creating new templates.
I like pie.
I've been experimenting with the program and as far as I can see now, RapidWeaver seems only to be able to make static pages. For making a blog I find that very limited. I'd like the possibility to work with databases in order to allow multiple user accounts and a web interface for example.
Well, I think I have to turn to other blog software, although RapidWeaver seems to perform well with static pages. But that's just not what I'm looking for.
I think you can buy some different add-ons for the functionality you desire. Ask denny.

It is a shame that RW requires plug-ins to design a more thorough kind of website, but it's still pretty good on its own. The themes part seemed to me, at first, a bit of a let-down, because you couldn't really edit them as you'd wish to. But then, all I had to do to transform, for example, the Birthday theme (into something actually quite cool) was Photoshop.
Between RW and iWeb, I don't know which to choose, to be honest. I've designed one website on iWeb, looks great, and one on RW, which also looks great. I think I'll be switching from one another quite often...
Don't forget to buy me a present!

One of RapidWeaver strengths is it's expandability through plugins
and themes while iWeb is quite static. In regards to RapidWeaver and
the Stacks plugin by YourHead, there has been an overwhelming amount
of 3rd party development of Stacks plugins. The new functions and features of
these stacks are simply mind-boggling in terms of the new possibilities,
and ALL THE WHILE being extremely easy to use.
As per the above post, joeworkman is one of these developers. His Stacks
plugin products are absolutely INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC in the diversity and
power they add to websites authored in RapidWeaver.
RapidWeaver users (new and old) should definitely check out his offerings!!

Hey guys,
My name's Isaiah, I run YourHead software. We do Stacks and Blocks and a bunch of other cool stuff for RapidWeaver.
I figured since everyone here has brand new copy of RW and Stacks is pretty much the must-have add-on, it would be a great time to run a promo.
Would you guys be interested in a promo if we ran one? For Stacks? Blocks? Maybe a big discount on our bundle?

Hi Isaiah,
Yes, I for one would certainly welcome a MH discount on your plugins
Thank you very much for offering
But remember as Macheist people we are used to not paying very much ![]()
I don't understand what stacks and blocks are and therefore have never used either. Frankly, I've always thought stacks and blocks were so similar that they should be one product. Am I wrong?
Either way I never thought $25 was justified. Hell, rapidweaver itself didn't cost me that much.
I like pie.
Stacks and Blocks are very similar but also pretty different as well. Stacks really clicked for me. Ever since then, I have been a web page building machine!!! Oh yeah and became a stacks developer along the way... ![]()

Definitely interested and I would definitely purchase a BIG discounted Macheist on your bundle. If you do it earlier rather than later more will sell since RW was just in the last bundle, or you could even try to get RW sold again in another bundle where your plug-in's are featured in it? But to answer your question, yes we want it.

For me, I like Blocks. It just works better for my purposes. Still, Stacks is amazing. I actually bought RapidWeaver and the YourHead bundle at the exact same time because it just made sense. My entire site is pretty much built on Blocks.

Blocks is a very powerful plugin for RapidWeaver - no doubt about that.
I was using it religiously for some time. When Stacks came out, I thought
it was cool but really didn't use it too much. I guess it's because Blocks
allowed me to put content WHEREVER I wanted to - in an exact fashion.
I did find one problem with it though, sometimes content jumped around
a little bit, especially flowing text. Since this was causing me a little grief,
I thought I would use Stacks a little more. And.....
When using Stacks, I found content stringently adhered to one of the
fundamentals of good design - Alignment. Our eyes & minds REALLY
LIKE it when things are tidy and Stacks is very good at this. Plus, when all
of the fancy custom Stacks plugins started coming out, then I was
hooked for sure! I haven't touched Blocks in a very long time because
I find Stacks does everything and more. When using Stacks, webpages
come together (and look great) in the FASTEST time possible.
So, in a nutshell...
I really, really, really like Stacks!

From what I understand to be true, RapidWeaver licenses from the previous
version and the current version all work and are interchangeable between
versions. (v.3 & v.4)
I also suspect RapidWeaver will have an updated v.4 some time this year. If
this occurs, it will not be a major version upgrade. Therefore, all serial
numbers are likely to be very safe (and useable) for some time to come.

I might be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it was a $25 upgrade price to get a new key to go from RapidWeaver 3.5 to 3.6 and then it was a free upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0.
I wouldn't assume anything regarding licenses and upgrades.

I know that it also has to do when you actually purchased the license.
I paid for the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6. I then found out that I was eligible to get it free because of the date I purchased the original 3.5 license. Realmac Software gave me a refund and a new license.
But reading the FAQ on their website, they pose limitations on any promotions (as in a Macheist bundle).
I only have one copy of Rapidweaver, and it seems a waste of a new license, so I think in this case I will have to contact them to find out more information.
