The TL;DR on Espresso 2 Upgrading.
Page 1
Upgrading from Espresso 1.x to Espresso 2.x is $29.
Upgrading from CSS Edit 3 to Espresso 2.x is $64 ($15 discount).
Much more simple than the original wording made it seem

Plus, if you try to buy CSSEdit 2 now, it only directs you to a page where you can get Espresso + CSSEdit 2 as a bundle. So no way to buy CSSEdit and get a free upgrade. I'm not sure it would be much cheaper anyway.

From what I've read, you get free upgrade to Espresso 2 if you've bought both Espresso and Css Edit after 06/29/2008 or Espresso alone bought after 04/10/2009. In both case, Macheist was before, so no free upgrade.
Besides that, I like the idea of putting together Css Edit and Espresso. It makes it easier to use

Interesting. I've bought CSSEdit on Dec 25, 2008 and Espresso as part of the MacHeist bundle. So theoretically I should be eligible for a free update, which I didn't really expect. Would be great though.
Emailed support to clarify if this is true.
Edit: support says I'm eligible for a free update. Yay!

1. Licenses purchased as a part of MacHeist bundles are supposed to be identical to the ones you would have purchased directly from the developer. The DIrectorate has been very clear on that point.
2. SpeedDownload 4 was in a previous MH bundle. The bundle sales period took place shortly before the release of SpeedDownload 5; in fact, so shortly, that it fell into YazSoft's "free upgrade" window (a common practice to appease very recent customers who might feel "cheated" by so recently buying something now outdated).
3. MacHeist customers were denied a free upgrade (in fact, IIRC, explicitly excluded in "print" on their site).
4. The Directorate resolved the matter on our behalf, and we received our free upgrades.
This MAY, POSSIBLY be another case of MH licenses being treated as "less than" direct-buy licenses. It won't likely go over well.

From what I understand, MacRabbit's policy is to give a free upgrade on Espresso 2 if you purchased it after a certain date. So this isn't the same as the SpeedDownload 5 fiasco.
But interestingly, the cutoff date happens to be a few days after MacHeist 3 ended. And Espresso 1.0 was released just as MacHeist 3 was starting.
So I guess one can interpret this as a giant "fuck you" to the people who paid full-price for Espresso the first couple of weeks it was out... and a "go to hell" to MacHeist 3 purchasers.
It seems legit. It doesn't seem very cool.

They should have made the cutoff date more like January 2010 (or even December 2010!). There's no reason why a company should extend its free upgrade period that far back unless it's to make a point. And kind of an unnecessarily cruel point.
Then again, I can see that they might really have wanted to give a free upgrade to all v1 owners, but not be able to support giving it to the vast pool of MH users. I mean, what if we're 70% of their license base? The cutoff date was mostly to exclude us and the initial purchasers are collateral damage (who knows, they may be able to work out a deal in private with the sales team if they complain).
That being said, I like Espresso, I don't feel hostility towards MacRabbit (unlike PotionFactory, for example), and if the upgrade price is reasonable I might go for it anyway. After 2.5 years I don't feel that I'm absolutely entitled to a free upgrade.

I see it as very generous, not a slap in the face to anyone.
After all, Espresso was not part of the MH bundle. It was a freebie app.

I think their free upgrade offer is very generous... that's a HUGE upgrade window.
As far as whether they intentionally excluded MacHeist: yes, BUT I don't think it's a problem. MacHeist is likely a large part of their user base, and they can't just give out free upgrades to everyone and stay in business. By doing this, they can make some money from upgrades from MacHeist customers (who, face it, got a VERY good deal on it!) and they also make customers who paid full price very happy. And it's not like YazSoft, who intentionally excluded MH customers who were within the "normal" free upgrade window.
Seems like a win-win to me, and I'll be upgrading for sure.

I do care about CSSEdit and not so much about Espresso, but it's integrated now into Espresso 2... In a way somewhere hidden... I hope they will pack more CSS3 features into it... like rounded corners, gradients and so on....

One would think that. However MH has said that unlocked apps are 'freebies' and not part of the bundle. I know it makes no sense, but thats how they responded when someone had an issue with THL.

You need to take that particular "response" in context. I'm pretty sure we're thinking of the same issue, and the person who said that was mistaken. I'll try to find it so we can all be informed, but in the mean time, take John's word - if our license is shown to be treated any differently than any other, he'll deal with it.

Honestly, unless Espresso 2 is a terrific upgrade deal, I might just finally take the plunge and buy Coda. Not a fan of MacRabbit rubbing it in MacHeist bundle owners' face with the upgrade path, especially given they've been completely MIA for a year.

I'm not sure I see all of the features from CSSEdit's screen shots in Espresso 2. Is there a selector tool, or validation tool? Is there any kind of graphical style creation, or should I use Flux for that?

If CSSEdit works in Espresso the way it works by itself, I'll be happy. I don't mind that I probably have to pay the regular upgrade fee. I'm just tired of not having all that awesomeness in one package.

FWIW...they have not been MIA. I've emailed them many times about bugs and features. Every time I get a response, usually the same day. They explained the v2 situation months ago and were very aware they bit off too much. Publicly very quiet, but behind the scenes very busy and ready to help.

This. If you want to go for Coda, do it for the program itself, not because you feel MacRabbit is cheating you (they aren't). Personally I still can't find a really convincing reason to switch; personally I prefer Espresso's handling of multiple monitors over Coda's, which for me is crucial.

In Espresso you can drag windows/tabs out to other monitors very fast. Try it... open a file and its preview and drag the preview out of the sidebar; it forms a new window and you can put it wherever you want. To me, this kind of flexibility is very helpful.

I dunno if it's just me but I barely see any major feature changes in Espresso 2. Am I missing something?
I downloaded it. I see that the CSS files have this new style bar... the icons have new icon files... anything else?

Espresso 2 final is now out! Only $29 upgrade for E1 (including us). I figured it was worth it.

personally I think the sync feature is awesome, you can sync with online projects and do the "offline edit and publish when you save". most likely I will get it, the only thing I worry they release a mac app store version and force for upgrade again.

Not that all developers with plans for MAS can be trusted to not become MAS exclusive, but this is what MacRabbit's FAQ at http://macrabbit.com/espresso/faq/ currently says for the question "Will Espresso 2 be released in the Mac App Store?"
"We have no inclination to move to solely distributing Espresso through the Mac App Store..."
Whenever it goes to MAS, I'm sure it'll start at $29 to grab eyeballs and a good ranking.

Apart from HTML and CSS, what do you people even use Espresso for? I see that it has some support for other languages, but I have no idea how it compares to the (old) TextMate editor.

I use it for ActionScript. I use FDT as my main AS3 editor, but the usability issues with Eclipse means I need something a bit friendlier if I want to reference code from other projects. TextMate does the same job (project wide search), but I prefer Espresso's interface.

Espresso is an amazing app, 2 is even better. I use it hours daily for work & I am super pleased with just $29 for the upgrade. You folks need to chill man, just because it was in a bundle in 1928 it doesn't mean free upgrades for life.
