In the spirit of the holidays, we are teaming up with Mac developers to offer software freebies to anyone interested through this year's Giving Tree.

For those who have never heard of this tree, it is exceedingly rare and highly seasonal, grows quickly with enough attention, and tends to be seen with presents clustered underneath for visitors. There are many varieties, but this is a Mac Giving Tree, and will bear some great software freebies for any Mac users around the world.

How do I pick up my free gifts?

On sign up you'll immediately be able to download freebie builds of the popular iTunes controller Synergy, as well as sequel to the monster app store hit Enigmo, Enigmo 2. In addition you'll unlock two presents available for pick up on Christmas day.

How do I get the two ghosted presents on Christmas?

You can invite friends in to earn up to two additional mystery freebies (one per person), adding to the loot you can pick up on Christmas. When your friends sign up with your invite email, the invite presents will turn solid, one per invited friend.

The Giving Tree tends to thrive on buzz, and a lot of it can cause it to do some strange and very cool things. Spread the word!

And make SURE to come back on Christmas to pick up all of your gifts, including any you unlock from referring friends.

Just don't get on the naughty list.

Sorry aot213, forgot to mention that you need to click on the Apple logo star at the top to 'set' your sequence.  If it isn't right, nothing happens.  Make sure your speakers are turned on, because when you get the combo right you'll hear "Moof" as the 8 dogcows light up in rainbow colors (similar to the original Apple logo ... well, not THE original, but what most people remember as the original logo).  It's pretty cool.  Then a second purple tag is lowered to the left of the MacHeist one, and it has your secret app. 

My guess is that we'll need it for MHIII.  Good luck!

BRB = Be Right Back. They're aware that we're hammering the server and they're working on a solution.

Why do people seem to think they have the right to not be offended?

w00t! The tree's back and it looks like the wind has shifted: the snowflakes are now falling right-to-left where they were left-to-right before. Was the server just facing the wrong way? Simple fix, but I have trouble imagining that in the troubleshooting checklist.

I sent an invite to my Dad, got BRB on the website.  Tried again later and it went through just fine.  He got 2 Invites.  I'm not gaming the system, honest!

Looking forward to seeing what the referral gifts will be.  I know he's signed up.  I sent another couple of invites out to other friend too to be sure.  I'm glad you didn't set the referral limit too high, I only know 3 other people with Macs.

How long before the invites are really being sent?  I tried one to myself to see what I'm spamming people with, and to check how long it is taking, but it hasn't come in yet.

Note to Phill and Phriends: It would be nice to be able to add a personal note to the invites going out.  That might increase the number of completions (and would let me see what I'm spamming people with).

@reesmaxwell - I agree - and check your spam folders.  I did the same thing - sent the invite to myself first to see what it looked like... gmail dumped it into spam. I ended up sending a mass email with a personal note and a comment to look for the invite in the junk folder.

Yes they work, and no, you won't see any change until he signs up (then you'll have to reload).

He must use the invite link to sign up...
