If he did take the photos, I'm still kind of confused about the timestamps on the photos. In order for GPS to work, it needs to have very accurate time signals, which is why all cell phones have their clocks automatically set over the network. So I don't get why he would take the photos so early in the morning. I'd expect him to have gotten the package hours earlier, in which case, in the heat of the moment, I'd expect him to immediately whip out his iPhone in frustration. I think I would have cooled down in a few hours and been less likely to post the photos online. tongue

By the way, image editing programs can edit EXIF tags, so I don't know why they couldn't also edit the GPS coordinates.

Good analysis. I concur with your logic.

Look at the time the first post was made - he took it before he posted the thread.  The man has other things to do and it has been holiday time...other things come first.

An obvious practical joke leading to confusion over the identities of the victims and perpetrators. I like!

If you view the images in Preview, the coordinates are available (press Command-I, then click the centre tab), and link directly to the spot on Google maps...

Great tip!

God I am lost in all this... My brain is too small..

So Casa Santa - means house of Santa - right?
Coal = stuff for snowmen - right?

If Santa was sending mail from Florida - wouldn't he use the official places like:

Official Santa Mail
5604 William Grant Way, Tampa, FL
33610

or

Letters from Santa
1315 Palm Drive, Apopka, FL
32703

?

I agree with Chewy: hoax by either John, or possibly, a person who got onto John's account :-)

Wow. MacHeist 4. I can't believe it's actually happening.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'm sitting this one out because of aggressive version requirements. It's been real.

US Postal Service doesn't show 13500 Cypress Hammock Drive, Boca Raton, FL as a valid address, either.

You can write whatever you want for a return address.  It doesn't need to be real.

Apparently Phill came into the IRC last night and said this was nothing - that somebody really sent John some coal but w/a bogus address.

John's hardly the most popular guy out there - we know he's drawn the ire of plenty of pundits, developers and bloggers.

Aww, poo. Stalkers are no fun. I wanted something puzzlish. Yeah, good luck with that, John. wink

[edit]Actually, now that I think about it, the stalker at least did his homework. I mean, the street name is located in that town, and the zip code matches the town, and the state is right. So he obviously wasn't just writing down something random that popped into his head while standing in line at the post office. I'm guessing he either lives really near that place or he's sending some private message through it to John. But, dude, if you're gonna be a stalker, you have to disguise your location better than that.[/edit]

Actually as an italian phrase, it would translate more appropriately to "Holy House" ... but it can also mean "the house of Santa's family" big_smile

I've now a doubt about this "heist"... I had 'cos it's not in "MacHeist III forum" (that doesn't appear for me), and now there is this new forum "Member Created Heists" but this thread hasn't been moved.

However, I was told that when we solve an heist, we know what to do... Here, i've got the impression that all our deductives anwsers leads... Nowhere. Juste an "i make a connexion" and nothing more.

But i'm still thinking about, it is at least a good exrcises.

I know that, Warbrain, but since Google's maps are not real time and no one mentioned they had checked USPS, I did.
