Well the 3.02 update (which is free for MacHeist users) released today changes the wording to "Restore Safari to Factory Defaults" along with many other updates.
I tried to find an Update link from the App/Menu Bar while the app was running, but I couldn't find one. Am I just an idiot who missed it or must I download the update somewhere else? (These are not mutually exclusive possibilities, mind you).
You can download MacDust from MacDust.com
I decided not to use Sparkle because it makes MacDust a bit bigger than it really needs to be for only doing updates.

Fair enough. Thanks.
I for one have absolutely no problem for the tradeoff of a little space for easy backups, because it didn't inform me there was a new version, what if there was a bug or an error somewhere, someone downloads that version, runs it and problems happen, instead of being told there's a new version when they open it.
plus I'm lazy. ![]()

I would like to be the dissenting voice here and say that I think Sparkle is worth including in MacDust - I'm so used to seeing it in many of the apps I use, and I'm used to how quickly it automates the updating process that I wouldn't mind if it used up the extra space. (I'm assuming we're talking about a few '100k or so.)

MacDust 3 is 1.7mb, MacDust 2 with sparkle was 3.7mb. 2MB is a bit much for automatic updates if the app is less than 2mb itself.
EDIT: The removing sparkle decision was also made before I started using S3 for distribution. I might put it back in because S3 bandwidth is a ton cheaper.
good lord, didn't realize it was that much more. I personally don't have a problem with it, really, what is 2MB anymore? If you decide not to include sparkle, maybe an option that will at least inform people of a new version, then you have to go to the site to download it.

2MB isn't much for storage, but 1650 downloads in 24 hours with an unnecessary 2mb with limited transfer quota can be an issue. But not anymore thanks to S3 ![]()
I dunno, we'll see. But I'm thinking in-app updates are a necessity.

I think Sparkle has a provision which will let you do that - I've seen in it in apps which seemed to have Sparkle built-in but instead of downloading the app update for you, it would redirect you to their site.
Frankly, I couldn't care less about an extra 2 MB, but I do understand your side if it's sucking up more bandwidth. Since you seem to have a better hosting plan though, it looks as though it's not a major issue for you anyway.

The thing now is to trick Sparkle into tapping the download counter, last appcast I set up it had checked versions based on the .dmg name. I basically copy/pasted it from someone else ![]()
I have no idea how to _really_ set up an appcast. Does anyone know if I can make Sparkle download through my counter (download.php) which redirects elsewhere (using header ("Location: "); )
Isn't an appcast just a glorified RSS feed?

You could set up .htaccess:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteRule ^download/(.+) /dl.php?file=$1 [R=302,L]
</IfModule>I haven't actually implemented Sparkle in anything before, so I don't know the details. I'm pretty sure the Cocoa internet stuff follows redirects as it should.

I've added simple Automatic Update Checking, it will make TUAW shudder though.
It's just simple for now, figured I'd push this update out so people would be more in-the-loop.
Sparkle may find it's way back in though.

Thanks for adding it. Sorry for any undue peer pressure my initial question placed upon you.
Nice app indeed!
Currently using the browser part of the application.
But I am just at little curious to what a Local cache are in OSX and if it is totally safe to empty them or for the matter all the options under system tab?
It would be great if this app had a help file with a description on what is exactly is happening with the different options. Or maybe it’s just me.

lordmiss informed me that the MacHeist flag gets set, even with the language incompatibilities. 3.04 should see the flag and not bother you.
"but It wouldn't work all the way crashed." is very different from the language issue.
The language sets issue allowed MacDust to open, but not show the main window, but it had plenty of time to write to the preferences.
Go to your preferences folder ( ~/Library/Preferences )
and look for com.theapplegeek.MacDust 3.plist
If it exists, email it to me; if it doesn't exist, still email me.

I was pretty happy with MacDust until I realized that its solution for clearing Colloquy logs is to delete the entire folder they're stored in. I had Colloquy set to save logs in my main Documents folder. Guess what happened. Fortunately I only lost a few unimportant files thanks to Time Machine, but I hope the dev comes up with a better solution in case I'm not so lucky next time. (Sorry for the bump, but I wanted to share that with any possible new MacDust users)

I've made a function index.

Please look through it, and let me know of any changes you think should be made. Especially function descriptions, I can't tell if you understand them or not.
Really fantastic. If you made the last section flexible-width it could go in Help Viewer, but I haven't looked at the source so I really have no idea if that's doable.
nice app
i use it with Onyx and xslimmer

Well, MacDust got updated. We Heisters now have to pay, but it looks like we get special discount to purchase at 1/2 off.
Will have to debate this as some of the features I get with Cocktail where logs are concerned.

If you decide against getting a full license, the version you download from your loot is 3.04 so there's no hoops you have to jump through to get the last MacHeist version.
Care to comment on how MacDust compares to Coacktail. I know MacDust is only $6 for us to upgrade to the latest and onward, but would be nice to have a sense of where the two are similar and different.

I really can't comment on it, I haven't used it in years.
Last I knew it was all maintenance things.
MacDust is for specialized cleaning functions. MacDust is designed to pick up on the data left around by certain applications on a regular basis, rather than running maintenance scripts. Though there are some tools that have been added by request they aren't the main focus of MacDust.
How did you guys get MacDust? I cant find it under my mainframe section.

It was part of a mini heist that was done like a month ago. We had to find some files and post them here:

I am astonished so many people didn't think resetting an app might have other consequences, and find out first.
Great app Timi, and many thanks!

Wow...that's kind of lame that it was updated so close to when we got it...then forcing us to pay to keep it...

I'm blue da bu dee da bu di....oh ya I went there.
One thing I would like to comment on - I'm glad that you give Heisters a discount on the new version, but it would be nice to have some sort of notification in the update screen that we would be downloading a paid upgrade.

how to get this app in the mainframe loot - haven´t had it there :-( did i miss anything ?
MacHeist 4 - for real ?

You do not have to use 3.05
You are more than welcomed to continue using 3.04 from your loot if you don't want to upgrade.
I update the software a lot because when I find problems, I like to fix them fast. That's not being lame - that's being responsible.
Don't reset something I intend to use? Laptop? Wii?
Seriously, I didn't think reset Firefox would completely wipe every damn thing off of it. My toolbars and addons have gone as well. I was expecting cookies and caches and tiny things that I didn't know were there but needed removing...not a complete wipe of everything.
Yeah man. Reset was the wrong word to use. "Completely Erase Every Frickin Thing" would be better.
Time Machine FTW

And if I missed this little Mission?
I personally think it's a great application, frees up quite a lot more space than you might think! Plus, its quick, and now I couldn't imagine life without cleaning my Mac every time I download something big or visit a lot of websites on several different browsers (clears cache). I only think that including NetNewsWire would probably make this a must have!
Blue Moof!
I missed the Mainframe event, but going to purchase this - I get really annoyed by weird bits of useless data taking up disk space. This looks like it's just the ticket!

And best of all, the developer's nice. ![]()
Seriously, I'd put him in second only to Jerry Brace on the friendliness of developers. That's counting all the developers I've ever contacted.
I don't seem to have MacDust in my list of "Loot." Did I miss something? Seems like a very handy app to have...although it sounds like it may operate similar to Onyx or MainMenu.
