It seems that everyone is after points... there are many theories around, so i made up a list. can users please confirm this.

VERY LIKELY:
- finishing the nanomission
- watching the debriefing
- doing the agent aptitude test
- uploading your avitar
- improving your forum ranking
- replying to topics (mainly to different topics)
- reading lots of different posts
- adding a signature

UNKNOWN:
- Changing your password
- Using the search section of the forums
- Clicking on the ad for the "Classics" iphone app on the main page
- Sending and receiving Private Messages
- redoing the missions
- doing nothing (it sometimes gets you points, just not a lot)

UNLIKELY:
- creating a new topic
- being one of the first to reply to a new topic
- visiting the looters sites
- clicking on the "dig it" icon on the right
- adding info to your profile (other than avitars & signatures)
- @macheist on twitter (your twitter account is not connected to MH)
- Logging onto IRC
- Subscribing to the RSS feed

Notes:
- some users believe that points are handed out randomly.
- mods don't know anything about it (or so they say)
- some points are not added instantly. wait an hour or so!
- points don't decide colors, the test did that.

IMPORTANT:
users can lose points. some think it's for spamming the forums others think it's just random.

I just made my tenth post, bumping me up to pickpocket on the rankings. No increase in points though ...

I'm voting for completely random or triggered by events beyond our control

I've had the same avatar for two and a half years, just "renewed" it to the same image, and I went from 165 to top 70. Queue the WaMu woo-hoo!

Thanks for the information. I've been wondering about the points myself.

Great list... And something tells me that sooner or later we're going to find out exactly what these points mean.  Sure, that last part's kind of obvious but I just wanted to point it out.

i added an avatar and about an hour later my points went up by 10 so more evidence for the avatar theory

it seems leaving for a while seems to have something to do with it too. I was reading and posting for a while then just checked  my points every so often for a while and nothing happened(i did go down in the 100 list though)

logged out for a little while came back and points had gone up, Happened a couple times

Wow, my points just went up by 27 and now I'm in the leaderboards!!! I have no idea how, though...
I still think that being active in the boards make a difference though.

I'm on the leaderboards .. barely.  I also agree that posting must count for something .. maybe a point per post or so?  Still, it is odd that changing your avatar (once) bumps up your points immediately, but posting or whatever only bumps it up every hour or so.  Maybe that hourly thing is to confuse folks and make it more difficult to track what action equals what points.

What? Another MacHeist adventure is upon us? Fantastic!

It seems unlikely that visiting the vendor sites would change the ranking. Seems like a lot of integration work to be done with each of them. But what do I know???

So, the way to increase points in six words is this:

POSITIVE participation within the MacHeist community.
If you do that, you can't go wrong.
The avatar is explained by the simple concept that avatars make the forum look better in general. It gives a face to every user. In this way, it's positive.

Sending and receiving PMs also contributes, I think.

And to paraphrase John, spamming the forums will likely get you with points deducted.

So far, I have yet to see any example where my six word summary doesn't apply

The points also seem to change after a certain lag in some cases.  This makes it more difficult to link actions to points.  I made a couple posts yesterday and today my points jumped up a few.

Never forget that the nearest exit may be behind you.

If all of this is true, then I must add PM to the list. PM-ing people gave me 16 points.

I don't think points are added everytime you jump a level because I got points by posting and didn't jump a level

Yeah, that appears to happen. Once again, my theory is that MacHeist is trying to create a larger social involvement and also increase awareness and popularity.

Great post, I forgot how good the forums are in MacHeist. I don't think I looked at it, or added much last go round. I will make sure to keep watching.

And ... I'm off the leaderboard again. 

I would think it logical that going up in forum ranking would add points because that would encourage folks to participate more (well, that would really only work to encourage folks to participate more if it was known that that was a method) ... but that would certainly reward new posters much more than old MH2 or MH1 heisters.  Then again, from a marketing perspective .. who cares about the old hands, they've already drunk the koolaid and are going to be in no matter what.  Getting the newbies hooked is what matters.

I just wonder what the points are going to be for.  But that's what they want from us. LOL
