Can you have a look in your console and see if there's anything printed there about Hyperspaces? You should at the least be able to set desktop images for each space! (Unless you've turned off "Draw Desktop" below...)

om3ga777 wrote:

And what does that "Draw Desktop" mean? Why should I leave it turned on if it only causes problems with other apps?

Basically, I put it in to help users who use PathFinder, EarthDesk and their ilk - it was a way of still allowing desktop labels and the other features of Hyperspaces, without overwriting their desktop. It's also good for low memory situations - turning off the desktop background (which is what this setting does) stops Hyperspaces from caching the images for your spaces, and drastically reduces memory consumption.

Does that cover it?

Works fine now, all my fault ... thank you!!

Btw, if I can make a suggestion to the developer.  I've been searching for a app that behaves like a UNIX-style virtual desktop pager for spaces for some time and even posted about it awhile ago, but never knew your app existed until the loot.  I had searched on versiontracker, but the description of your app didn't suggest anything like this.

If you can make the pager detachable and make sure to advertise this in the description, I bet there are a *lot* of ex-UNIX/Linux people who switched to OS X that are desperately searching for something like this, so you could get a good sales boost.

Thanks.

Hi Tony. Hyperspaces is a really great app! I really loved using VirtueDesktops, so when I found out about this one I was thrilled to see it. However, I installed it and it runs great. But I'm having some problems customizing the wallpapers. Whenever I add an image, all I get is a white empty box. I took a glance at my console and saw this:

Feb 28 14:12:32 Macintosh [0x0-0x290290].com.thecocoabots.Hyperspaces[11225]: CoreAnimation: 2560 by 1600 image is too large for GPU, ignoring
Feb 28 14:12:32 Macintosh [0x0-0x290290].com.thecocoabots.Hyperspaces[11225]: CoreAnimation: rendering error 500

Am I to understand there's a limit on the size of the image? I would really like to be able to apply my hi-res wallpapers. Thanks!

I love this program so far, I do miss the option to not have it in the top menu bar at all (and not in the dock). But for the rest it's great.

Thank you very much!

Besides using Warp, you should also try using Dock Spaces with Hyperspace.  It allows you to have different docks for each space, and it will automatically change the dock when you change spaces.  It's free too.  http://www.nscoding.co.uk/dock.html

Also, I had a strange bug with hyperspaces today.  For some reason, the a key on my keyboard stopped working.  I couldn't get it to work, so I quit out of hyperspaces and then it worked again.  I tried to reproduce it but I couldn't.

Finally, derekl your screenshot doesn't help me.  Are you able to have a different wallpaper on each space while using PathFinder and hyperspaces?  Because the title of my space shows up using hyperspaces, it's the wallpaper itself that doesn't change unless I quit out of PathFinder.

This is more about your video card than about your image. Because of the way Core Animation works (Hyperspaces uses Core Animation to do it's drawing), it push images onto the video card without breaking them up. On lower memory video cards, this results in the "white background syndrome".

I have a few ideas about fixing it before version 1.0 is released - keep an eye on the updates.

This is fixed in the latest internal build - you're welcome to download it and give it a try before I release it properly: http://hyperspacesapp.com/macheist-file … es_656.zip

I'll be really up front about the upgrade path (I think I have been so far): You'll get updates until version 1.0 is released (this includes 1.0 final). That means that the bugs you're experiencing now will most likely be fixed, but there may not be many new features added.

Well, it doesn't - you can disable this from your Growl preferences. Look under the 'Applications' tab in the Growl preference pane - you can just uncheck Hyperspaces. This is how I run my copy because I want Growl to tell me about things I don't know I already did tongue

I never said it wasn't possible, but if you're using PathFinder's desktop it will generally draw over top of Hyperspaces. I've got a few fixes in place in the next build (which aren't perfect).

great app! I read about it a while ago, but since I (as I am sure many of you all do) read a lot of blogs about  related awesome, I lost track of it. Here we are now though. I was going to post in here about how much a resources guzzler that it is, but I won't waste your time by making you read it, Tony. I guess I did anyway. I love what you have so far, and if you can work out that memory drawback, then you have my full support (and wallet access) come 1.0. Thanks.Peace

p.s. before posting this message i spent the last 20mins switching between spaces and setting the wallpapers that were most aesthetically appealing and best fit the four genres that the spaces represent. All with an apple-inspired background. Thank you for helping me feed my OCD for the next hour or so.

Aside from setting background / labels (which doesn't contribute to productivity in my work style), how is this different from spaces in Leapord?

The features:
Background, labels, and color fade: not useful for me... maybe someone wants these?
Switch: click on the spaces icon in dock, or activate it using trigger via QuickSilver
Hotkey:
- Direct to screen: fn + number, or command + number, configurable in spaces' system preferences
- Neighbour screen: fn + arrow key, or command + arrow key, configurable in spaces' system preferences

The only feature it is semi useful for is probably background on different screens, which, frankly, 95% or more of the time, people don't see their background wall paper anyways (covered by windows doing work)...

*shrugs* Not an app for me I guess.

I think the idea with spaces is to have an uncluttered desktop so you can see the background.

someone mentioned Spacesuit.  I tried it.

I like the way Hyperspace allows you to add background pictures.

With spacesuit, if have dragthing set to click on desktop take you to the finder, then you only have one space that you can drag a picture from.

This is a very pleasant surprise, at the time I learned that this was going to be in the Heist.
I downloaded it once, but scoffed at its limited features as a trial... I dont want to spend money on something that should have been implemented in the OS by default, customizing Spaces, but then I guess customization to the finest detail is a sacrifice for apple's idealogy of simplicity and necessity. tongue

I also D/L'd the version from this thread but no joy there either.

This application has improved a lot since the last time I used it last year. I didn't like the fact that there wasn't any smooth transition between the wallpaper changes which Mac OS X does if you enable random wallpapers and woke up your Mac from its screen saver. However, the recent version has it! smile

Thanks MacHeist for including this in my loot and I would have bought if it if wasn't the case! big_smile tongue

I don't think this feature should be in this application since it seems a Spaces centric application. You may have heard of Dock Spaces which complements this application nicely but the most annoying thing about changing docks is that the Dashboard needs to be reloaded sad

Another nice feature, if possible would be to disable the built-in spaces animation when switching spaces.  It seems OS X has no way to turn this off, if it's possible for hyperspaces to do this, it would be great.  (Or maybe it will be possible in Snow Leopard.)
