if it's a leftover piece of the .5 trail, I really wouldn't know (wasn't here then), but I imagine thats all it is.

Yeah, left over from .5. Also, as far as we know, Hubert is not related to macheist, except that we had to follow his trail in .5. The directorate said in a thread somewhere that Hubert is not their monkey.

But the directorate is also known to deliberately misdirect us at some points. (Don't trust them...)

When has he done that?
The Heists are mysterious, but never deliberatly confusing.

It is a hold-over from the pre-Heist heist.

While the Hubert trail is still doable, its original form has been slightly mangled.  This piece, while still maintaining a semblance of being part of the trail, has since been removed.
