What is the minimum amount of RAM to work nicely with BoinxTV ? I've tried on my MBP 2,33 / 2gb RAM and it has crashed while trying to convert a 3-4 mn sequence into quicktime. I had other apps opened in the same time (Safari, for example). So perhaps with my RAM I should avoid to use BoinxTV with anything else opened ?

If you have problems installing your license, please follow these instructions precisely: http://www.boinx.com/articles/license_faq/

Please note that the license is not just the code but the whole text block containing your name, organization and the license key.

I'm unclear on the whole "Weather Map" layer. It seems like it's only set up to do Germany, and that's it. To an extent, that's somewhat understandable, but it would be nice if we in the US could simply pick one of the 50 states.
Alternatively, are there easy instructions available on how to make our own Weather Map, with a graphic of our choosing?

I was a little disappointed after registering BoinxTV to see that it is a "Sponsored Edition" (SE) version of the software, which if I understand correctly, means everything I make with it will be watermarked or somehow adorned with the BoinxTV logo. I was under the impression that all apps in the MH bundle would be full, regular edition products. Furthermore, it would have been nicer if the MH site said "BoinxTV SE" and not simply "BoinxTV", as it is somewhat misleading about which version we are getting. In my case, this is not a deal-breaker -- although it is frustrating, and I can see how some people might not like it.

You misunderstand the Sponsored Edition.

Copy/Paste from the BoinxTV website :

What's the difference between BoinxTV Sponsored Edition and BoinxTV Full Edition?

Technically there is no difference. The BoinxTV Sponsored Edition requires a 5 second credit for BoinxTV in every video created with BoinxTV. The idea behind the Sponsored Edition is that we'd like to "buy" advertising time with this rebate. Learn more about the BoinxTV Sponsored Edition.

@ALL: If you have trouble installing you license, please take a look at this video: http://blip.tv/file/1960058

@LaurentR: The RAM is not as important as the graphics card. To get best performance a good graphics card is important. For the crashing, please get in touch with me using the internal support assistant ( BoinxTV > Send Feedback)

@jegrant98: All the layers in BoinxTV are Quartz Compositions, so they can be modified in Quartz Composer, so if you know Quartz composer you can create your very own weather map.

@DistantThunder: No Watermark! We just ask you to play a 5 second clip in every video you create with it, if you  don't like the video simply say that this video was made with BoinxTV.

See, Boinx is nice. They could have been a pain and watermarked the video like everyone else but instead, they simply ask you to put that nice and cool 5 second credit to Boinx TV at the end of your movie. If you cannot follow the honor system, then good for you.

I love Boinx. I have one question that I cannot seem to find anywhere. Is there any downloadable layers or do we just make our own.

*If we do have to make our own, how bout a GUI software for it?

@bigjon94: Thanks smile
All the layers that come with BoinxTV can be found inside the Application bundle under Contents > Resources > Compositions > Layers
They can be opened with Quartz Composer which is a GUI application that you find for free on your Leopard Install DVD in the developer tools. So you can either modify the Layers we deliver or build your own from scratch, both with the free Quartz Composer from Apple.

@schlingel: Hi, and thanks a bundle for participating in MacHeist smile I'm truly awed by BoinxTV ! smile

I wanted to ask you about the weather map as well. I did look at it (briefly) in Quartz Composer, but I didn't see any obvious item that represented the map image itself (I assumed that replacing the map image and reformatting the numbers ought to be enough).

Any pointers ? smile

Nevermind - I figured it out smile

Directions for other interested users:

#1) open up the "Weather Map.qtz" in Quartz Composer
#2) have an image (not too large and preferrably in portrait mode with transparency past the coastline/border) of your country/territory handy
#3) right click on the reddish-pink box labelled "Weather Map  4" and select "Edit Macro Patch".
#4) drag your image onto the macro patch canvas and drop it there
#5) look at the green box marked "Germany smal" - make a not of where the two patches are going
#6) follow the patches to their end, click the end of the patch and drag to release. Drop the patch and it will be erased.
#7) create a patch from your image to the same place as you removed the patch
#8) repeat for second patch
#9) open up the "Patch inspector" (blue "i" in toolbar)
#10) make sure the Viewer window is visible as well
#11) select the reddish-pink "Position 1" box
#12) in the Patch inspector, set the top selector to "Input parameters"
#13) use the dials to move around one of the weather icons until it's placed where you want it
#14) repeat for "Position 2", "Position 3" and "Position 4"
#15) use "Save as..." to save the file on your desktop. Name it something other than just "Weather Map"
#16) to the right of the search bar in the lower left corner of BoinxTV there's a button. Pressing it reveals "import compositions". Click that.
#17) select wether your'e importing for yourself, or all users
#18) select which categories your weather map should belong to
#19) drag your weather map from where you saved it, and drop onto the "drop here" area
#20) select your weather map in the compositions list. It will probably contain the preview of the germany map - it did in my case (will investigate further at a later time) and drag to the main area above the Placer
#21) enjoy your newly-brewed weather map smile

I love BoinxTV even though it does run a tad bit slow. Unfortunately I didn't read that it my white MacBook wasn't supported, I was just so excited to see it in the bundle.

So now I must go get a part time job to afford an iMac. *sigh* But anyway, the software works fine, it's just slow.

@Ezit: yes. That's what the chroma keying is for. You want to have the background in a single colour - preferrably green (there's no green in human colour - unless your'e not feeling very well wink).

And don't wear any green clothes when your'e using chroma keying, or you'll have a hole in yourself on-screen (i.e. the green becomes transparent).
