Wow, was about to install EventBox when I thought of checking the thread. It is effectively quite misleading to offer it as a bonus free app.

As for those mentioning the "privilege" of testing a BETA, well as far as I'm concerned it is also quite an advantage for developers to get feedback absolutely free. As long as everyone knows it, it's pretty much a win-win solution.

But then again, seeing how this app doesn't update past MH-only version updates  (will there be any others, for the memory leak for example?) is quite sad. 15$ isn't all that much and I might be tempted to buy it, but the way it was advertised just makes me think of all the other apps at 15$ that don't use this scheme to make their app visible...

That's great news.

I fell for the functionality in EventBox and bought it. The memory-leak is/was really annoying, but sonce I don't hang on my Facebook it's worth a restart of the app now and then.

One question though… Where did you find build570? I just downloaded from their site and bot build 567 again)

Stupid me...

Just switch from Stable to Bleeding edge in Preferences->update

However, for all to notice... This is probably only if you have boutght a license and not for the MacHeist Eventbox.

The deve;opers of the app have definately lost my support. That's for sure. I dont usually like to complain but the way it is done is very much like cheating as far as i am concerned. Giving away a half finished app that would never get support or updates (unless you pay for upgrade) doesn't really count and is not good advertising for the developers either.

iliria wrote:

From what i have heard a similar thing has happened in the past with the Speed Download app from Yazsoft (the developer locked the app to Mh members after a few days) and people including macheist were not happy about it.

BigMark wrote:

I can completely understand the developers limiting the Macheist version so that future features are omitted, but only providing a memory sucking demo of your software under the guise of a free app (whatever lack of the upgrade policy) isn't going to win any friends.

I know people may post "you didn't pay so you haven't lost", but didn't we download "Get Eventbox Free" and not "Get a time crippled memory leak restricted trial of Eventbox free"?

It does appear that unless the developer makes a memory-leak fixed Macheist version available then this years "Speed Download Award" sadly goes to Eventbox sad.

brent.bourgoine wrote:

The fact the app offers to upgrade itself, with no mention that it'll change from "free" to "paid" seems like dirty pool to me.  Yes, the download itself was marked "this build free", but it shouldn't offer "helpfully" to update itself (like most current Mac apps) each time it starts, without notice that once you do **WHAM** no more free app.

inetguy wrote:

This stinks.  It was billed as a bonus app and yes it was stated that this app was special for MH, but come on, the party just ended and now this "new" version is a 14 day time bomb.

I've been trying to restrain myself but this is just too much. Are you guys listening to yourselves? How on earth were you ever wronged by MacHeist or by The Cosmic Machine over EventBox? The self-righteous sense of entitlement that I'm seeing here is absolutely astounding. Maybe the naysayers were right after all - maybe MacHeist truly has driven down the value of independent Mac software developers and their products, if the comments about EventBox here are any indication.

First off, how were you lied to, or how were you the victims of any dishonesty on the part of MacHeist or The Cosmic Machine? The Directorate promised a free, unlocked version of EventBox for you, which you would have otherwise paid $15 for had you decided to buy it yourself...actually, for *anyone* who dropped by the MacHeist main page to see the bundle. You didn't have to pay a cent for it. It wasn't part of the bundle; it wasn't even part of the loot, as you didn't have to complete a mission or solve a puzzle for it. You were given a fully functional version of their software.

Second of all, the software which was advertised to you was advertised as a social network management app, was it not? Mainly for Twitter, Facebook, and Google Reader, with most of the emphasis on Twitter. When Twitter functionality - part of the core features of this app - was lost (due to an undocumented and sudden server-side change in the Twitter API), they fixed it with a prompt update. Which means that the MH version of EventBox you're supplied with now works as well as it did when you first got it. Again, where's the crime, and how are you the victims?

Thirdly, if you'd bothered to make the effort to see EventBox's website, you would have easily seen that it was a beta. Of course stuff doesn't work right. Why are you suddenly all acting as if paying for beta releases of apps is a crime? You paid for a beta when you bought the bundle and got The Hit List beta release; I'm sure some of us paid for the beta version of OmniFocus way back when it was released. How is "discounted beta" == "crippled demo"? Especially if you've been given a version of the discounted beta for free, with no lock on its functionality?

Yes, they pushed out a paid update through Sparkle, which no matter how you slice it, is a very, very bad idea. But if you'd bothered to read the EventBox support thread or even this thread, or even the EventBox/Cosmic Machine blog on Tumblr instead of whining, moaning and complaining, you would have found a free update to the original MacHeist build issued for you. It's nowhere near the level of what YazSoft did; we paid for SpeedDownload as part of our bundle, so we all had a stake in making sure YazSoft stayed honest with us. We never had that level of commitment with The Cosmic Machine because they gave us their app for free! They gave us an update with no fuss and no muss; it took YazSoft a protracted and long, drawn-out campaign over several months to get what we fully paid for.

And what's up with everyone complaining about the MH build being version locked? We've gotten free version-locked (to varying extents) apps from MacHeist since January, even more if you count the Giving Tree; developers gave away version-locked apps during MacHeist 2, MacHeist 1, and MacAppADay, and even MyDreamApp, if you remember that far. Have people suddenly forgotten about how common this is nowadays? As sfchris mentioned, magazines like MacWorld have been doing it for even longer.

This incredibly immature sense of entitlement really needs to get toned down. If I were an indie dev. and I saw the level of baseless and greedy outrage over an app that was given free to them with no strings attached, I might want to think twice about getting involved with MacHeist. I'd want a customer base with which I can get involved with and from whom I can get helpful feedback and support, not one which seems to have some over-inflated, self-important sense of entitlement to my hard work for free without any concern whatsoever for how it affects me as a developer.

The developers who've given us support above and beyond our role as MH members have done so likely because they feel they have the resources and finances to do so; with others, it may not be so. Why do you think it's your right to punish more resource-strapped developers for that? What entitles you to have such hostility? Again, you didn't pay for their app: it was given to you for free.

I'd never thought I'd ever see so much complaining and whining over a free app which was given to them in exchange for nothing (not even any kind of email registration)...but I guess now I truly have seen everything.

rampancy is right on many counts. The developer already provide one support release to the MacHeist community, which is more than I expected since it was an unsupported version.

I think I may have seen this in the thread her somewhere but if people can't live without Eventbox and aren't willing to pay the full $15 for it you can use coupon code FRUUX-20 for 20% off.

I said nothing about "have to". They should, because it would probably make the MH beta-testers look more favourably on this app. It's in their best interest.

Or, to play Devil's Advocate, if you like the EB minus the memory issues, it could push users more to purchase the app to get the fix plus the multitude of new features and fixes that have and will be implemented. Problem is, since the last MH version, they have implemented things like Twitter conversations and improved features and functionality of other components (like being able to save embedded links from posts to Instapaper). The devs would have to spend a fair amount of time just to revamp a MH version without the new features. And of course where does it end? What if you find yet more "critical" bugs? It all becomes rather subjective. It's one thing to expect the devs to fix something that breaks like they did, but it's another to expect them to polish the product even more when they said from the outset that this version would not be subject to such updates.

Try doing a complete uninstall by using AppZapper or AppCleaner, and then re-download the MH build from the first post of this thread or from the EventBox support thread. What likely happened is that you've wound up with the MH version using the preferences from the retail version.

@Rampancy, I couldn't agree more on the text you wrote, and do agree that MacHeist should be a win-win situation for both the developers and the users.

Now, having myself quoted at the top and being called an immature and moaning/whining, whatever-you-want-to-call-it person seems a little too much.

What I expressly stated was that it SEEMED misleading (confusing might have been more appropriate). It's been some time now and I think I will try it out since most people and reviews praise it's functionality.

As long as a concern is raised in a polite manner, I think it has it's place in the forums. And the fact that an app is free doesn't mean you can't critique it (the other way around, does it give me the right to say an app from the bundle is bs just because I paid for it? not at all).

I hope this can shed some light on what I tried to explain in my previous post, which was meant to be anything but a direct attack to undermine the developer.

N.B: I think most of the post should be understandable but I'm french speaking so please excuse some grammatical issues.

Geez, no wonder you're a one post wonder!! Read anything else in the thread?? No, probably not...

I think this was a great giveaway, even if I don't like Eventbox as much as Nambu anyway (don't do Facebook etc). It's something you can use again and again if you wish to, and for free.

I just hope people aren't scaring off indie devs from participating. It'd make me think twice if I was involved in one...

They basically provided a cut-down version for MacHeist which is unsupported and, to use their term, "ancient".

To me it looks like they used the MacHeist to publicise their software and to get people to buy it.  If you use update your licence gets revoked and you get told to buy a licence.  (I did anyway...)

The Cosmic Machine has updated this free copy of EventBox with recent updates to fix issues related to the Twitpocalypse. Furthermore, to address issues with the MacHeist version updating itself to the retail version through Sparkle, they've issued a separate update feed for it to use with Sparkle.

Well it shouldn't be that much of an issue for you at least, as all paid customers will be getting a license to the full version of Socialite.

As an aside, I think they should have bought out the rights to use the name Socialist. Having an app called "Socialist" on my Mac again would be awesome (though I shudder at the class war my apps would be having if I had Democracy (now known as Miro) also installed on my Mac).

WTF? Earlier today I received an email offering a free license:

Eventbox Users: Claim your Socialite serial number!
"As we promised at the time of the acquisition, we're giving all Eventbox customers a free copy of Socialite - and this email explains how to get your serial number. To grab your copy, we've generated you a personalised one-time coupon code for our store that gives you a free copy of Socialite! The link below will take you to the store, and add a free copy of Socialite to your shopping cart. All you now need to do is simply check out and enter your personal details (no payment details required) and you'll be issued with a shiny new serial number!"

That didn't work and shortly afterwards I received a followup:

Having issues claiming your copy of Socialite?
"We're noticed that a few folks are experiencing issues redeeming their free copy of Socialite. If you're not seeing a coupon applied at checkout, we're sorry for the inconvenience: here's how to fix it!

Here's your individual coupon code:

Simply claim your copy of Socialite now and apply the above coupon to get your free copy.

If you have any issues with this coupon code (such as it simply appearing as coupon above), please let us know by replying to this email and we'll make sure you get a Socialite serial number to use!"

Sure enough that didn't work either so I replied and explained what was going on. Immediately got a an autoresponder directing me to http://support.realmacsoftware.com/faqs … censes-faq which explains:

"I received an email about a free Socialite coupon but have never purchased an EventBox license.

Unfortunately due to an error with our mailing system - some folk have received email notifications that they can obtain a free Socialite license and then they find that there is no coupon code or that it does not work. If this is the case then unfortunately we cannot offer you a free license and you will need to purchase a license from our online store.

I obtained the limited-edition free MacHeist build of EventBox. Am I entitled to any discount on Socialite?

Yes you are! We're offering all users of the limited-edition free MacHeist build of EventBox a 25% discount on Socialite. An email containing a coupon code should be on it's way to the address you initially signed up with. If, after 24hours, you still haven't received any emails, please check your spam filters and then open a private support discussion."

That's the way loot is. Everyone was able to get a copy of EventBox free; it wasn't a part of the purchased bundle. Anyone that so much as visited the site could get a copy.

Similarly, that license wasn't a full license, since it was the only app displayed that wasn't actually a part of the bundle. It was free, and you got a lot more than you paid for on this one.

However, deals for MH users still continue, as there's a discount available. If you like it enough, why not show your support for the developer?

Ah see I didn't realise it was loot, though now you mention it... indeed if they've just coughed up for the software [company] it's unsurprising they'd want to recover their costs!

Thanks for the prompt response - I'll check it out.

This looks like it could be a big app. I like the social networks they have now, but others would be cool.

Does anyone know if there will be a new Eventbox-Version? The website seems to be shut down...
