Hey all, I need a bit of help. I can't figure out how to get the app. After entering a username, password and clicking on the "generate my free copy" button, Macheist sends me to twitter and nothing happens. Where do I get the app and the registration code? Thanks!

Okay, well twice squeeze has corrupted its databases and I tried uninstalling it the first time, but didn't succeed until I used appzapper. Then I went to dinner while squeeze was running, and when I came back to see what was completed, It gave me this error. http://grab.by/2I1p again. So, my question is, are all my files still compressed, or were they uncompressed when it crashed?

And we're back!

So over in the Front section, jmsuijkerbuijk and I have been discussing an issue regarding constantly rising "space savings" in our respective Documents folders.

He managed to source his problem to a help/manuals sub folder, and I have pinpointed my Pro Tools sessions folder (not an application directory, just a place where I chose to store my sessions) which also contains some documents, and a couple of data CD created .dmg files

Now obviously we can expect the amount of total savings to rise as we modify the contents of our folders, but, to the best of my knowledge, I haven't actually accessed my Documents folder since installing Squeeze (other than in trying to solve this issue).  Also of note is that my Documents folder was originally about 30GB - Squeeze reports a saving of 50GB, which is rising by around 100Mb every few minutes.

I think I've noticed a correlation between the increase, CPU spikes (b/t 60% and >100%) and messages printed to system.log.  It appears that this is a permissions issue, and when things have settled down a bit, I should be able to locate the file that is causing problems.

Heres a small snapshot of my system.log:

Feb 27 13:58:07 ben-frearsons-macbook-pro /Library/PreferencePanes/Squeeze.prefPane/Contents/Resources/SqueezeHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/SqueezeHelper[9725]: /var/folders/IN/INr25BHAFC8dwtPTOXDpb++++TI/-Tmp-/LNS-tmp-6496692/rsrc: set flags (was: 00000000): Operation not permitted
Feb 27 13:58:07 ben-frearsons-macbook-pro /Library/PreferencePanes/Squeeze.prefPane/Contents/Resources/SqueezeHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/SqueezeHelper[9725]: /var/folders/IN/INr25BHAFC8dwtPTOXDpb++++TI/-Tmp-/LNS-tmp-6496692/rsrc: set times: Operation not permitted
Feb 27 13:58:07 ben-frearsons-macbook-pro /Library/PreferencePanes/Squeeze.prefPane/Contents/Resources/SqueezeHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/SqueezeHelper[9725]: could not change mode of destination file /var/folders/IN/INr25BHAFC8dwtPTOXDpb++++TI/-Tmp-/LNS-tmp-1682740927/rsrc to match source file /var/folders/IN/INr25BHAFC8dwtPTOXDpb++++TI/-Tmp-/LNS-SQ.rWcT01: Operation not permitted
Feb 27 13:58:07 ben-frearsons-macbook-pro /Library/PreferencePanes/Squeeze.prefPane/Contents/Resources/SqueezeHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/SqueezeHelper[9725]: /var/folders/IN/INr25BHAFC8dwtPTOXDpb++++TI/-Tmp-/LNS-tmp-1682740927/rsrc: set flags (was: 00000000): Operation not permitted

Seeing as I can't see a way of working out what these temp files actually relate to, I can't see how I can locate the problem this way.

I'm happy to be running Squeeze, and I don't mind running it selectively either, but it is annoying having the savings count constantly increasing.  My plan right now is to try and find the troublesome file, and if it isn't an important system file, change the permissions, or move it elsewhere, or, if it isn't something I can track down, exclude my documents folder for now.

In future updates I would definitely appreciate some kind of "reset" button on the savings section, and also maybe an exceptions option and a way of detecting troublesome files or folders.  From what I've read on the Squeeze webpage, I'm fairly confident that it would be possible to manually add exceptions in the plist with a small update anyway.

I would love to hear from LateNiteSoft about what is causing this, and whether there's anything I can do about it! Will a reinstall reset my savings count? (I know my actual savings won't be shown as things are already compressed)

edit: oops, the code tags didn't behave like I expected them to!  For some reason they don't add a horizontal scroll bar, just truncate at the border of the page!  I'll post them as normal text - just copy them into textedit to raed them properly, unless a mod can tell me how to make it work?

From what I can tell by experimenting, once squeezed items do not become un-squeezed.  I'd be willing to bet no amount of activity within squeeze, or even uninstalling will cause previously squeezed items to return to their previous size...

I noticed when I removed some folders from my squeeze list, the items moved to a 'perviously squeezed' option in the list, and the space I had saved remained free...

Actually you can "unSqueeze" files by moving or modifying them.  There's also a terminal command that you can use I think...Check at the start of this thread, or the one in The Front section for a link to an interesting macosxhints article about HFS Compression technology.  All Squeeze does is monitor selected folders and execute the command.  It's the same technology that Apple used to compress the stock Snow Leopard apps!

We have just published an update to Squeeze which improves stability by fixing some rare issues we discovered after launch, including the savings database integrity problem that has been reported here. Thanks all for the terrific feedback!

You can read the release notes for Squeeze 1.0.1 here:

This problem means that the file that stores the historic savings achieved by Squeeze cannot be written to - it was a rare problem that could occur in Squeeze 1.0 when the pref. pane and the helper app tried to access the file at once. Files in your computer have not been affected - only reporting from Squeeze was lost.

Squeeze 1.0.1, which we have just released, fixes this problem and other issues that have been reported here or via support email. Could you please download and let us know whether the fix works for you?

My apologies for the inconvenience this issue caused sad

Yes, it would be amazing if a feature was included in the next minor release that allowed the user to override the "not in main volume" "feature." Pretty much all of my files (except applications) are on a partition separate from my OS, to minimize data loss during OS installs and such, and not being able to compress any of it is a major buzzkill. It looks like a great app, I would just like to use it to its full potential smile

Please realize that I am not the developer, and I am not responsible if performing this next step breaks something horribly badly, or causes the nuclear destruction of the earth.

While I wouldn't try this myself, it does look like you might be able to modify the exclusion list located at (~)/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeeze.prefPane/Contents/Resources/SqueezeHelper.app/Contents/Resources/ExclusionRules.plist

Here is the entry that would probably need to be removed:
        <dict>
                <key>RuleType</key>
                <string>Exclude</string>
                <key>PathBeginsWithString</key>
                <string>/Volumes/</string>
        </dict>

Also, given the format and location of the list, I wouldn't doubt that exclusion list editing is on the "ToDo" list for the dev.

I just looked through the list and generally I can see when this list is going with the exclusions. I am a bit confused about why /Developer is on this list though. I know why I don't want to xslim the files within, but why wouldn't I want to squeeze them I wonder?

I hope the developer of squeeze will keep looking this thread.

As for version 1.0 or so, squeeze is already a wonderful tool to exploit the new HFS+ compression technology, I'm still missing some of the more devmode feature, like controling the exclusion list like other has mention before. I see how much carefulness the developer have put into that project to make sure it was dummy proof, but I would like an "aggressive" mode without throttling the compression process with wait time of 2 sec. Get access to a verbose mode seeing files been compress in the console would be insightful.  The developer should add sql database (*.db) in the exclusion list, as some mail index files.

Great apps, I will recommend it for sure.

I tried this app the second it became available.  The folders I chose to compress at first were:  Applications, Documents, and Desktop.   It crashed somewhere along the way with a warning saying it would lose all savings history but its menu bar icon was still there and showed it chugging along.  When I went to the pref pane it showed no folders in the window (the ones I had previously asked it to compress) and wouldn't let me re-add them.  Since I saw it was still in the menu bar working I let it finish, and by the end of it I had about 2GB saved!

Upon restarting the computer the next day I was promped with an update which said it would fix the previous issues found by people like me.  Update is installed and all seems to be working well, but when I re-added the folders it is showing only a few MB of savings.  I'm guessing this is because it really did compress those folders from the other day.. but it worries me that I can add, for example, the Applications folder again and still get some compression.  I mean, how many times can a single folder be compressed?  The fact that it didn't retain my folder history before it crashed means that it doesn't know that it has already compressed it,,,, or does it?  Does it know what files are already compressed and thereby leave them untouched?

It's perfectly normal and safe to get a bit more compression out of a folder later - Squeeze only compresses files once, but if any file changes it will recompress again.  The space saved by that compression will be added to the total, even though it didn't really save any extra.  The total is calculated based on the sum of all compressions, not the actual space saved in the folder.  If you'd like to know that, try something like Path Finder, which gives you the actual disk space occupied by the compressed files as well as their expanded sizes.

Command line afsctool may be of interest to report compression achieved or to compress files on an external drive. Uses the same Snow Leopard HFS+ compression as Squeeze. You can read about it at macosxhints.com sorry I can't post the link to it as I have not posted before so I am not permitted but Google for "afsctool macosxhints" will produce a few relevant links. It is not as user friendly or automated but is effective.

We are working on it smile But we want to do this properly, please refer to a previous post in this forum where we explained our concerns - we don't want people to experience any inconvenience when trying to share their compressed files with older systems or other OSs.

Our topmost priority now is to fix the remaining issues that some of you guys found. After that, this will probably be one of the first new features in Squeeze. According to your comments, we clearly underestimated the number of people whose setup relies on several separate partitions.

Incidentally, removing those lines from the exclusion list will not work, so don't try it smile The prefpane UI will still reject folders in external / mounted volumes.

Sorry for not responding to these messages sooner, we are totally overwhelmed by the fantastic amount of feedback we are receiving. But we'll get to this smile

Roger that, I totally understand. That's why I submitted it as more of a feature request in a minor update than an actual problem. I can wait. smile

And I must say, this has to be some of the best support I've seen of an application so far. Kudos to you and your team for that.

That information is stored in the savings database. You can delete it (please, set Squeeze to Off and quit System Preferences first), but then you'll need to add your folders again. Also, keep in mind that previous savings will not be recomputed - Squeeze will just report savings from newly compressed files.

This is interesting, but not really in line with the philosophy we wanted to achieve: "install Squeeze and forget about it: it will just work". We will consider adding an interactive / advanced mode in the future (a bit à la Xslimmer, perhaps?), but we still think there are many users who are keen on having their systems "optimized" without them having to worry too much about the process. We'll see what we can do.

Are you worried about files being opened elsewhere while Squeeze is working? Squeeze detects this condition, and will automatically ignore and postpone files that are being written to by other processes. Do you have any experience otherwise? Please, let us know smile

Exactly!
In addition, maybe the initial compression did not fully finish before the database was reset.

I've noticed something... may or may not be a bug. I'm running squeeze, its saved me 3.51 GB of space...yay.
However, the status icon is never a full pie chart. This may be because i'm compressing my entire hardrive, and thus squeeze can't compress certain things which are always being written to.

Maybe I don't understand what squeeze is doing.  Can I squeeze the applications folder?  Why not all folders?  You're right, I'm seeing no extra compression from photos, music or e-book files.

Yes you can "squeeze" the apps folder along with any other folder, but as stated before, music, photo, video and other files are already compressed and cannot be "squeezed" further, so it is kind of a waste of time to "squeeze" those huge media folders sitting on your drive.

I added my documents folder into Squeeze and after the pie filled in it came back with a savings of around 1GB. However, two days later I am at a savings of 2.21GB and that number is increasing, is this normal? Why would it show a full pie if it is still compressing?

Are you worried about files being opened elsewhere while Squeeze is working? Squeeze detects this condition, and will automatically ignore and postpone files that are being written to by other processes. Do you have any experience otherwise? Please, let us know smile

I did notice that a Keynote document placed in a squeezed folder, then opened in Keynote, then saved, caused Keynote to warn that the file had changed (or something like that).  Overwriting the file worked fine, but Keynote appears to be one of those programs that doesn't keep the file open for editing, thus making Squeeze think it's fine to replace it with the compressed version.  I think compressing Keynote files is great (it does save quite a bit of space), but maybe you could check to see if Keynote is open and just wait until it's closed to compress?  That way you'd get the benefit without the issues.

It is not as user friendly or automated but is effective.

in addition to that afsctool is static, while squeeze acts as a kind of service monitoring the folders to be compressed.
if you do use afsctool you need to run it every time you want to update a folder.

And I must say, this has to be some of the best support I've seen of an application so far. Kudos to you and your team for that.

1.0.2 is out!

Release Notes for Squeeze 1.0.2

Description

Squeeze 1.0.2 fixes the cyclic-compression incompatibility problem that affected some users. It also ensures System Preferences does not crash even if Squeeze's application support folder cannot be created.

Bug fixes

Bugfix: cyclic compression caused by incompatibility with other processes. When Squeeze was being used alongside other background filesystem tools, compression changes made by Squeeze could cause the other app to wake up and uncompress the files again, which in turn would cause Squeeze to run again. The net effect was an evergrowing display of Squeeze reported savings, along with unnecessary use of system resources by both conflicting apps. This incompatibility has been fixed by having Squeeze postpone processing of files that have been recently compressed, and by ignoring for a long time files that have simply been uncompressed with no actual change in their contents. This fix means Squeeze is now compatible with Hazel.
Bugfix: Squeeze prefpane no longer crashes if application support files cannot be created. In Squeze 1.0.1, inability to create the application support folder at the standard location would cause System Preferences to hang and not load the prefpane. Squeeze now reports this unusual condition and refuses to start if necessary data files cannot be created.
Added additional media types to the list of files Squeeze will ignore. New extensions to be ignored include Blu-Ray related extensions.

never seen devs acting so fast on community feedback smile

Well, I've pared down to just /Applications and the TechTool Protection folder.  I don't know if it's Squeeze's fault or not, but I've noticed some random beachballing and a few other issues (such as launchd jumping up to 20% CPU usage periodically and a few other random issues.  I'm wondering if Squeeze could be modifying the permissions of the files, but I don't recall exactly what they were before.

Like I said, this may or may not be due to Squeeze, but if it is it should smooth out as applications rewrite the files.  I'll check back and let you know if it helped or not.  If so then ~/Library/Application Support and/or ~/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache and/or ~/Library/Mail have some sort of issue.  I haven't experienced the cyclic compression issue, even on 1.0.1, so if it is one of these folders then there's something else going on.

I have noticed that sometimes when I have Squeeze paused it shows up as doing stuff in Activity Monitor. Squeeze is great, but I am really picky about what I have running at one time.

I know and observe about squeeze playing well with open files, but files that's keep changing like sql db or Entourage databases will be constantly recompress with some questionable drawback like, disk thrashing, files keep moving on the disk, and like sparse file, a new record doesn't normally need to rewrite to whole file has it would if the file was in compress state.

B.t.w. I've playing a lot with in inside squeeze, and I still got some issue about being unable to add or remove stuff in the list, my only solution so far is to delete the history and default file. That give me an other feature suggestion, will needing more processing, it would be cool knowing how much total space saving by all the compress files. I know I have saved over 10gig on my disk so far with Squeeze, but with nothing more to compress and my history keep being flush, I can't prove it to nobody.

I got some issue with the same conclusion, I've "squeezed" my /Library and /Applications folders and when I've run a repair permissions short after almost every singles files had wrong permission, but I've play a lot with my file system, and it was a while the last time I run diskutil. And it never happen since, so I can't give it the shot on squeeze on this one, but I will keep it an eye on this.

In a word, Yes.  The compression technology it uses is only available in Snow Leopard.

I'd like to put in a request for Squeeze to process files (owned by root:wheel) under the /opt/local (MacPorts) and /Developer (which currently seem to be explicitly excluded) hierarchies—surely prime examples of files that are rarely modified and could do with being compressed.

Hi,

Hope you can help.

I tried to install this and my System Preferences window got the Wheel of Death.

I force-quited it and checked my console. I'm getting a constant stream of messages saying:

04/03/2010 21:00:10    com.apple.launchd[1]    (com.apple.systempreferences.install[553]) posix_spawn("/Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/Resources/installAssistant", ...): No such file or directory

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

First question, are you using Snow Leopard? (Since it's only compatible with SL.)

Yep using Snow Leopard and 1.0.4.

Looking at the madness going on in the console I'd really like to reformat my lappy and start again. Shame my CD drive is knackered....
