I finally get to this screen, within the app

http://i48.tinypic.com/33lz43a.png

Then... does the usual license server problem popup.
To get there I had to click the menu, activate CoverScout 3,
enter my username and password (which took forever to register)
If I make it to their website, I then gota click upgrade product (who would have thought that would 'activate')
Then It'll ask me for my username and password again
Then the screen above comes up.
And then dies...

Course at any step I might end up with this dialog
http://i47.tinypic.com/hv14t2.png

then I have to restart the whole process again.

Still not activated, even if the steps didn't have a constant delay, or time outs on them, this is an incredibly annoying way to activate a product and stands to lose more customers because of simply that, might even encourage piracy when they make it that ridiculous.

Btw I am added on my own account, showing as 1 unused, my battle right now (the post above) is getting CoverScout app on my computer to realize this, maybe if they least let you enter a username on the app itself and let the app do the license download verification itself.

Freaking ridiculous.

Okay, WTF Equinux.  I did all of the security certificate stuff (which, I mean, really?) and tried to activate again.  And that worked, as far as Equinux is concerned--when I log into my Equinux account, it shows my computer as registered/associated/whatever with that license.  Except that CoverScout doesn't know this, and is still running in demo mode.

EPIC FAIL.

WTF do I do now?  Deregister my computer and try again?

Aha!! And, after that, trying about five more times to activate it finally worked.  But still, seriously, WTF?

Anyone who pays $40 for this kind of DRM is getting screwed. I feel dirty enough paying nearly $20.

This licensing situation is a travesty. It's also unfortunate that I choose now to use my iSale license from MacHeist 3, and I can't because their server is dead - so not only can I not activate newly purchased software, I can't activate my old software as well.

This is ridiculous and I hope it induces a change of heart in Equinux. I'm surprised to have seen no Equinux representatives here addressing the issue - not just that they're experiencing problems, but why such a convoluted system exists in the first place.

Most of us couldn't tell you. We can't get through the offensively draconian DRM to even use the product yet. I actually wouldn't mind a partial refund for this kind of treatment.

I wouldn't ask for a refund... rather I'd like the option to forfeit my license, and the % that they'd make from this sale be shifted over to the charity of my choice.

The hoop jumping is part of the application, as such even that should be included in what we 'think' of the product. It's kinda like asking someone to give their opinion of windows without any of the activation or UAC features and was walked thru it compared to someone who actually went and tried to buy the thing on their own. The process of getting the application is very relevant to the feedback of the app as a whole.

I could care less about hoops--assuming they are visible, and the jumping processes clearly explained, and no one shoves a giant concrete wall in your way every time you try to jump.

Having said that--meh.  The app doesn't appear to do anything useful.  I mean, I could Google for cover art and put it into iTunes.  I thought (although I misread, clearly) that CoverScout had SongGenie incorporated into it; without that, I can't see CoverScout as much of anything except a big, paid promo to buy SongGenie (I mean, it even installs SongGenie...).

I'm still trying, right now I'm constantly getting the license dialog each time I try.

Btw I noticed from little snitch notification it basically performs a search against image shack, flickr, google images, amazon and one other site against the artist/album name. But I haven't tried to set anything cuz of all the DEMO watermarks. Pricewise if I had paid 40$ for this app, I would have returned it for this kind of hassle, I'll stick to google images for those coverless albums I get every so often, lot faster than dealing with this thing.

Is there' an "uninstaller" for this app since you had to use an installation package to install it?

From the look of it Song Genie is a separate 29.95 application.

Considering the fact that this app does nothing more than find cover art (when it's not stonewalling you with DRM), I'm just going to uninstall it and take this as a lesson in testing all the MacHeist apps before buying a bundle. It saddens me to say it, but I have to start questioning the judgment of MH when they pick duds like this that (normally) cost so much money to do so very little.

I don't mind Equinux products, but a big reason why I don't buy their apps outside of the bundles is the registration process. Every other Mac application has a pretty simple license pane in the preferences or somewhere that makes it easy for everyone to register their products. With Equinux, the process is not intuitive. There is no page that says, "put your license here." Instead you have to jump through hoops and press a magic button, then do it again five times over until it finally takes. There should be no registration process - none of this enter your username to continue BS. I eventually found it by clicking around, but really Equinux? You treat activating products like a Windows company.

Besides that rant, I like CoverScout 3 as an application. For those weird albums I have that I ripped from vinyls that aren't on iTunes, it's nice to have this consolidated place where I can find and apply album art. It's a breeze to use, though I don't see the point in making "printing" album covers a huge focus of the app. How many people still organize CDs like that anyway? (Guess I'll find out in the comments below.)

Indeed.  Which is, frankly, completely effing ridiculous if you have to go through the same hoops.

You know, if this had actually worked right tonight, I would have considered buying SongGenie to go along with it.  But after this?  No thanks, Equinux.

Pretty much. The registration process is extremely important to the user experience as a whole - if you don't even allow people to easily use the software they purchased, then you've failed to get me interested in what's left of the product or any remain products you have on your shelf. Because I don't feel like dealing with such nonsense.

BTW, with just 7 apps, I think you could have found the time to make sure the activation/licensing situation was sorted.

Seriously, what is the reasoning behind this kind of absurd DRM?  If I was trying to pirate CoverScout, do they really think I would give up and dish out $40 for this app?  That would be asinine.

Instead, Equinix potentially lost THOUSANDS of customers by showing us just how shifty and draconian their DRM is.

If MacHeist is to promote your apps, Equinix is doing a terrible job.  Drop the phone-home DRM, treat us like adults and then maybe I will consider another app of yours some day.

Actually you can already easily pirate version 3.2.2 , sad part is, the ridiculous registration process probably motivated the folks to move that fast on cracking 3.2.2, and I'm guessing every minor upgrade from that to 3.2.6 were to counteract the cracking (would be sad if that were true).

It's kinda like how I grabbed a cracked copy of Windows XP Pro even though I actually owned a copy of the exact same thing... just to get away from the annoyance of actually being able to use something I paid for.

Finally got it to activate... ¿Steps? Hmm.... Tough, but I'll try...

1st... Open CoverScout, go to Menu > Activate CoverScout
2. Create an account (if up to now you haven't got one)
3. Login to your account via Safari on Equinux' website
4. Add your CoverScout serial into the My.Equinux thingie
5. Quit CoverScout, reopen, once again Menu > Activate CoverScout
6. Login to your account, cross your fingers to let the activation begin. If it doesn't ask you for your number, close the window and try again
7. If it asks for your number, put it in, click Next.
8. It tells you it will activate on your computer and no other computer will work, bla bla bla, sell your soul to the demons, bla bla bla... Next
9. Cross fingers and it will tell you it's activated (Not me, kicked me off)
10. Quit and login again until the activation done message pops up.

After ... let's see.... 2.5 hours of trying, I finally got my software to activate! It's easy! Simple and so straight-forward! Thank god we have technology working towards human race. I don't know what I'd without it... Now, I'll just try to send an e-mail and hope it gets to its recipients in 2-3 business days.... ::sarcasm off::

Yea I had that email too with the following instructions:

1. Launch CoverScout on the Mac on which it is currently activated. Click on "CoverScout" in the menubar and choose "Deactivate CoverScout".
2. The CoverScout registration window comes up. Please click on the "Deactivate CoverScout" button to reset the license and to be able to activate CoverScout on another Mac.
3. A confirmation popup will inform you about the license reset.
4. Launch CoverScout on the Mac on which you want to activate it. Click on "CoverScout" in the menubar and choose "Activate CoverScout".
5. The CoverScout registration window comes up. Please click on "Activate" and login with your existing equinux ID to license your copy of CoverScout.
6. Please confirm your personal details to finalize the activation process.
7. Done! Have fun with CoverScout on the new Mac.

only problem is #6 never happens.

Hey!  I finally got it to work!

I just clicked through the "activate coverscout" crap in the app about 50 jillion times, and one time, it popped up and said "activation complete" (or something like that...I was in shock, so the details are fuzzy).

Now, when I start it, it says registered to me instead of unregistered demo.   Hooray!

Wish I had some tips, but I seriously just clicked and clicked and clicked through the same nonsense and errors until it just sort of worked.

I sent Equinux the following email:

To whom it may concern,

Earlier this evening I purchased the NanoBundle from the MacHeist site which included a license for CoverScout 3.2.6. Upon downloading and installing CoverScout I've found the registration/activation process to be extremely frustrating. While it is mildly understandable that a smaller developers of possibly single applications could be overwhelmed by the traffic this only seemed to be a small part of the frustration.

After spending nearly an hour and a half actually registering an ID, I was incredibly confused on how to actually activate the product. I entered my username and password only to be presented with the site inside the window, with the most logical choice to click being "Upgrade my product", that of course either timed out or would allow entering an activation code, but upon entering one it would show that a license was added to the account... but unused with no clear way of how to actually activate it on the installed application itself. In all instances I get stuck at the following screen : http://i49.tinypic.com/2vbkc5v.png showing that the license is used... even though I am still unable to activate the installed application itself.

The excess amount of processes required to activate a purchase is disturbing, and I'm actually rather glad that I learned this thru the purchase of a cheap bundle as I would have been incredibly disappointed had I paid full price for this application and had the same fustration of activation, I've still been unable to activate.

Also I noticed there was a link on your site on "How to Activate" http://www.equinux.com/faq/317 unfortunately this link least to a no entries found page as shown here http://i46.tinypic.com/oseviw.png

Also when trying to trouble shoot the issue someone said to visit https://activate.equinux.com in order to manually allow the mismatched SSL certificate... surely this should not be an issue since it only cost 10$ to to obtain a new SSL certificate for a new subdomain or in the ballpark of 150$ for a wildcard certificate. I should never have to manually accept a mismatched certificate.

Noticed Song Genie got installed with CoverScout, Unfortunately due to my displeasures above I will not be purchasing it, as much as I may want it.

I would also like to uninstall the application(s) since the manner they were installed was with a installation package, as opposed to the typical mac method of distributing a dmg file with a simple drag-the-app-to-application folder. But alas I do not see an uninstaller provided, and the FAQ is of no use.

I hope as a company there are things learned from this experience, unfortunately for me as a potential customer I cannot recommend this application or any products pushed out by equinux until things improve, especially the counter productive licensing system which only serves to annoy legitimate customers, this is not how business should be done in this day and age.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my feedback.

Sincerely
Karl Blessing
