You know, I'm having flashbacks to iSale, which I got in MacHeist 3 and where I concluded after 15 minutes of dealing with the horrible design of the app and the horrible DRM that I would never, ever, have anything to do with the company ever again. I recommend Google Image search for your album covers, and GarageSale if you're selling on eBay.

Sigh.  After all that it doesn't recognize which albums already have artwork in iTunes.  Could create a list in iTunes with Doug's Applescript but then am still left with the manual process of searching and selecting in CoverScout.

Finally activated ("the regular way").

Pro:
- nice interface
- works really good
- nice additions (editor)
- saves you a lot of time (I worked with various scripts until now, but this wasn't as fast as Cover Scout 3)

Contra:
- installation process (I am a mac user! When it comes to such a tool, I want to drag the app to my application folder and that's it)
- registration process (A lot of our frustration is caused by their servers, but still, I don't want to create a special ID and want to see my software phoning home. This does not limit piracy, it simply annoys users.)

WTF what a stupid installer this app has. It decided that I wanted to install SongGenie and doesn't give you the option to NOT install in in the "Custom install". You can't even turn off the stupid SongGenie buttons in the app... that makes me sad... Talk about intrusive push marketing... Push marketing gives a bad rep (look at every printer diver bundle / apple with its iTunes+Safari bundles) and No-one likes it!

I do like the UI, but its not worth $40.00 for doing an automated Google / online store search for images then copy / pasting it for you. I'm glad it was part of the bundle cause I wouldn't of considered it otherwise at it would only save me about 10 seconds of my life... whoo?

Well I like it!

@ dsw   It might only save 10 secs of your life, but I have over 4000 albums, and  it's just helped me do all the ones starting with "A". That's enough for today!

@ everyone else:

If you used the iSale software from MacHeist, use your Equinox ID from that, and then it asks for serial number and you're done. Took me about 20 secs.

Actually, The one and only album that I needed a cover for out of my vast collection (thank you $10 music cd bins!), it wasn't able to provide me with one... So i had to use my scanner for the album cover anyway (would of been faster in the first place than stuffing around with the Registration on this app to find out it didn't have the capacity to do its job)... kinda sad really.

Apart from this app being a classic time waster that inspires more hate, sadness and furry than a printer with ink that costs more than unicorn blood, I do love Flow and Clips that came with the bundle (and fingers crossed for Rapid Weaver). Sadly I now have more licences to RipIt than there are fish in the sea. New App Please?

So now that I've got it working, it won't successfully reload my iTunes library after the first import, and as lasombra pointed out, it devours the CPU, plus the peripheral album images are glitchy as hell. On top of all that, it forces an install of SongGenie without a license. Wow, I'm impressed and offended at the same time.

Even after activation, I would still give up my license so the money may be distributed to charity instead. As for MacHeist, some of the heists and bundles in the past have been great (I loved most of MH2), but I'm really disappointed that MH is allowing such poor software in.

When its running, my Macintosh HDs activity (both read and right) go through the roof, which is interesting considering my iTunes library is not on that volume...?

This was the reply to my somewhat lengthy feedback to them.

Hi Karl,

thank you for your message. My name is Robert and I am happy to help.

What can we say, your very first experience with CoverScout and you can't even
activate it. Shame on us. We hope you'll let us make it up to you...

We've been busy working to fix activation this morning and can now tell you it is
all up and running! Please try activating CoverScout again by opening the
application and choose CoverScout 3 > Activate CoverScout from the top menu bar.

If you are already an equinux customer, please enter your equinux ID and password
to log in. You will then be prompted to enter your MacHeist activation code.

If you are a new customer, please create an equinux ID first. Once you have done
this, you will be asked to enter the MacHeist activation code.

Do enjoy CoverScout 3. We are really proud of this great software, which helps
make your Music Library really shine.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

Kind regards,

Robert

In short : we got activation servers up, give it a try again.

That was a pretty prompt response, so that is  a positive.  Their activation process still sucks...

Having activated CoverFlow this morning, I'm finding it pretty good to find missing album art.. but then what?  It will be rarely used.  I'm glad I didn't buy this outright at $40 - the price is waaaaay too high for what it does.

WTF!

I've tried 5 times now to "activate" this piece of crap. I choose "Activate CoverScout...". I enter my user id and password.  It says "Activation finished successfully!". Yet the dang thing STILL is not activated.

This blows. I can't believe the Directorate included a program that had such ridiculous DRM schemes.

Just a quick post to say that the activation process was a bit of a hassle last night and I wasn't able to play with the app as soon as I downloaded.  So no instant gratification for me.  That's expected though on the day of release and a "call home" activation process.

But this morning I'm cruising through my library and updating cover art after a painless activation when I woke up.

Was already paid to MacHeist not directly Equinux, and especially if you paid with Paypal. The beuaty of using something like Paypal or google checkout is that you shouldn't have to give those personal information to a company, an order/invoice number, and contact email should be enough.

Some of us are using 1Password from a previous Heist, well the strong password generator for that won't work with Equinux unless you are full aware that you need to go in and dumb down the criteria a bit. Also most of us have been taught we should try to use least some symbols in the passwords to make them stronger, text/number only is pretty easy to brute force now days, depending of course how their server handles inquiries (chances of someone trying to randomly find an account is pretty slim).

You've got to be kidding. You mean every single time I run CoverScout I have to sit through this app phoning home to ask "Mother, may I?". And every time their server gets the vapors (like this evening) I won't be able to use the program I purchased (like this evening)?

Whatever happens with CoverScout, the registration hassle and this "phone home" foolishness has guaranteed I won't be purchasing anything from them again. (Unless it's in a MacHeist Bundle.)

This seems really arrogant. Not to mention inconvenient. I own a Mac, I know lots of great programmers who don't give me grief when I buy something from them.

Same though it had some trouble with most of my cover-less albums being foreign artists and what not.

Seems they price it at 40$ solely for it's potential to be a one or two time use app.

On what hopefully won't come off as spam…

You people need to use a site (that I really did find and am really unassociated with) called Get Video Artwork. It has the highest resolution covers you'll find.

I tried to implement the search into CoverScout, but I can't seem to do that because that's not how the site works.

To close the loop on this, I emailed the address above and they "reset my license" and had me remove  the com.equinux.CoverScout3.plist from my Preferences folder. I was then able to "activate" CoverScout.

For the record, I'm definitely not a fan of the activation and licensing schemes for some of the apps (see also "Clips") included in this nanoBundle. I usual recommend these bundles to all my Mac friends, but not gonna do it this time.

After 2+ hours of trying to activate this app last night I wake up this morning and I finally get it to work. I'm still pretty disappointed that it dosen't have a lot of features, they sell this app for $40 and you would think it would do a little more than fix album art.  And on top of that when I installed CoverScout it decided to install an app called SongGenie too, without me knowing.  It would be nice to give SongGenie a try but you can't because it won't fix the songs unless it's activated, at least give me some kind of trial, like 100 songs.

I'm glad this happened, because now I know to avoid Equinux in the future.

The closest I can get to implementing Get Video Artwork into the app is by doing these steps:

Open the Preferences window for CoverScout. Select the Web Search Pane. Click the little Add button in the lower-left corner of the window.

Type "http://getvideoartwork.com/index.php?action=gallery&g2_view=search.SearchScan&g2_form[useDefaultSettings]=1&g2_return=/index.php%3Faction%3Dgallery%26g2_ion%3Dgallery&g2_returnName=albumhttp://getvideoartwork.com/index.php?action=search"

Now, do a web search by clicking on the appropriate button, the one that looks like a globe. Unfortunately, you'll have to type the title in again, but at least it works.

Yea that was part of the confusion, you already got registration details from MacHeist, but to actually use it you must give Equinux your street, email, phone number, city, state, zip.

The only time I would feel the need to give them that information is if they needed to verify billing but in this case thats handled by MH.

Uninstalled, never to be considered again. I expect better of the MacHeist folks to be honest. You have my information, you issued me a serial number. If that number winds up floating about, you know exactly how to hunt me down.

Equinux's draconian measures have ruined my interest in anything they do until they change their registration process.

In principle you can.  In practice, it doesn't work, at least not for an iTunes library on an external hard drive.  I have several thousand albums with artwork in iTunes all of which show up as having no artwork in CoverScout.

I too thought it was very cheeky to ask for address details in registration and then sneak SongGenie in on top of that during installation.  CoverScout is fine, if a tad resource-consuming, but the Equinux experience has left a sour taste in my mouth and this app I can easily live without.
