We're not quite sure what's causing these issues right now with RipIt, but if you email the developers through this page: http://thelittleappfactory.com/contact/ they should be able to help you out.

Edit: Whoops I see the RipIt developer is here now, upgraded his forum title to "Developer".

For me on average it takes about 25mins using either the ComboDrive in my MacMini or a USB LG DVD-ROM.

Have enjoyed RipIt so far, but it's missing one thing. I know it's beta, but the compression option needs to be able to preserve the original aspect ratio. I hope that can be built into a future release.

Taking my copy of Matrix Revolutions and trying to rip it.
[Rarely watched it and kept it in case but one day the mac would not play a portion of it, though you could skip and see frames of it.]

Anyway, the rip started off fast, but now its at 1hr and staying at 84.5%
Im guessing this means there is an error but RipIt is not able to display a message and abort?
Or its working overtime to get through those frames?

Im sure RipIt is a fine program, its the dvds that companies ship pre-scratched that need a good talkin' to. wink

Peace

Tried it both ways (cut/paste and manual type), and specifically checked for white space at both ends. Didn't help.

I have to give Ripit a big thumbs up from my experience, I would have purchased this bundle just for the one app.

with around 200 DVDs you really cannot fit them into a student room at university, and if it only does 75% of my collection (average so far has been 1 in 4 thats not ripped and often disney) it will mean I can go down from lugging 200 movies down to 50 and thats just fantastic in itself!

And the compression being built in is wonderful! Im not much of a movie buff, so the aspect ratio is something I just never realised had changed, but all the same for a beta big thumbs up for this app!

I was super excited about RipIt until a test revealed the same issue.  Very unfortunate.  I hope you can get an enhancement to address this.

I've been using RipIt for a few months and, let me tell you, the dev team is stellar about addressing bugs. They stand behind their work, and that alone makes RipIt better than the competing DVD ripper for Mac.

The main reason I got the bundle was for RipIt (and, after trying some of the others, it may be the only reason). Love the program; only thing, the compression option (beta) hasn't worked so far. Once they get that working, it is a killer program!

Use Burn (freeware) or Toast (problems, though, compressing long movies in 'movie only' mode) — although you can use DL discs if you don't mind the expense.

I'm also thinking of trying DVD2oneX2 — any recommendations on this one? The price ($55) seems a bit high for burn software, but if it will compress longer movies onto standard DVDs, it may be worth it.

Also, I've been running my rips through HandBrake to get them down to a more manageable size for burning. It works wonders — The Box went from 6.4GB to 1.9GB after HandBraking it, and 2012 went from 7.8GB down to 2.9GB.

Don't let reality interfere with your life.

I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't handle DVDs with a different region than your DVD drive though.
I was hoping to use it to rip these Region 1 Micheal Jackson DVDs that my father accidentally purchased in a trip to Hong Kong, but it seems like I'll still have to rely on Handbrake for this.

EDIT: Edited for typo and clarity
EDIT 2: Disregard that, it appears that my drive malfunctioned or something, RipIt is perfectly able to rip DVDs even if they don't match your DVD drive's region

That's the point, I would like to be able to rip a DVD that has been purchased for a different region since it's still a legally purchased DVD.
Handbrake lets me do this, RipIt doesn't.

No biggie, but it's a shame not being able to use it in this scenario.

@iDarbert - isn't the region hardware dependent (drive firmware)? I know I've changed mine a couple of times for Region 1 discs, but R2 is my standard setting. You only get five changes. I've never tried Handbrake to see if another region would work though.... I found it too slow with VLC/Fairmount and got fed up.

Yes, Apple lets you change it 5 times (4 actually since the first time is used to initially set the region).

Handbrake will rip your DVD no matter what region it is. There's no need to use Fairmount if you are using Handbrake, in fact I'm pretty sure that's the cause of the slowdown you have experienced smile

Why do some companies make it so difficult ?

This screams "user error". It's likely not the company's fault at all, since it's working for everyone else and they're enjoying the product. You could contact support and try getting some help before badmouthing the developers publicly for a problem that is likely yours and not of their doing.

Except that he's not the only one getting the error. If you look up-thread, you'll see me report the same problem, AND ALSO see the developer acknowledge it.

You could contact support and try getting some help before badmouthing the developers publicly for a problem that is likely yours and not of their doing.

And you might consider what happens to your own reputation when you bad-mouth somebody having a problem while YOU obviously don't have complete information.

In RipIt's changelog http://mac.softpedia.com/progChangelog/ … 37288.html
it mentioned that  "Using the new and improved UDFKit, RipIt is now able to handle discs that do not match the region code in the drive’s firmware..."
Does it mean that it rips movie that is not the same as my drive's region?
(which seems not, from what other mentioned in the forum...)

Just purchased the bundle and gave a run to Ripit.

On my PowerMac G5, and my Region 2 DVD drive, I was able to rip a Region 1 big DVD (1941). So I suppose this prooves Ripit, just like MacTheRipper, can handle any region DVDs.

Just a suggestion to developer - when ripping with Handbrake, if the app comes across damaged sector, it tries a few times to read and if unsuccessful, it skips it and continues the process.

With RipIt, I had a number of DVD's that get stuck at certain percentage and it just doesn't move.

Any chance of making the app skip over damaged areas ?
