I know I am one more among hundreds, but...
THE REGISTRATION PROCESS IS INFURIATING.
Well, with that out of the way...
The program did the trick for me. I had 4000+ tracks without artwork, and I set it to work on all of them, with instructions to automatically add the artwork. There were A LOT of indie and mash-up tracks in there, that have no official artwork. The program did a very nice job on 95% of them. Not all the artwork is perfectly accurate, but the artist is always correct, and that's good enough for me. This program saved me about 20 hours of Googling and tedium. Despite it's glaring flaws, I am thankful for the program and the work it saved me.
it came up with hundreds of albums which it said didn't have covers (but they did)
had the same issue trying it out yesterday. really strange. what bugged me more though, was that I suddenly had some tracks duped in my library, not sure if this was coverscout or something else, but that was really scary

REALLY UNHAPPY with having to create some account at "Equinux" to activate Cover Scout.
MEGA UNHAPPY.
MacHeist is cool, but stuff like this should be blatantly called out in the app info in each bundle so people can decide if it is worth it or not. For me, it borders on not being worth it.
Hopefully I won't find other situations like this in the other apps...if so, I won't be buying another MacHeist bundle.
I could only get through 6 pages of this thread...I saw Equinuxs first response to these issues and it was woefully lacking. Having said that I see why people saw piracy hurts business and the legitimate user.If this hyperbolic and yeas "draconian" method of data mining (and it clearly is just that) DRM protection is this company's response to piracy then the 100's to thousands of turned-off buys will hurt their business so in a way piracy hurt them. But HOW you respond to a problem is infinately more important than the problem itself. This company picked a poor way to respond. And from what am reading here and from my many experiences buying software online – they DO NOT in this case need to have our physical address. That's invasive. The push marketing (as some have called it) of installing song genie is INVASIVE. Demanding that I forever be tied to your company vis a vis an account to use a onetime software purchase is invasive
Let's be real, it's like giving a one night stand your work number, home number and cellphone number and keeping a standing sate for lunch once a week. Way beyond the parameters of the relationship.
Seeing responsive action like the ones Equinux has taken does not make me root for them. In a job I previously held Tune-Up was the software of record for cleaning up missing art in itunes. I (based on early experiences with the product) always personally recommended Cover Scout. No more.
Equinux, let this be a lesson to you – you threw away a chance to sway THOUSANDS of potential buyers of SG (at full price!) because of your horrible horrible process. Blame 50% of it on the servers if you must but accept responsibility for your over-zealous attempts to thwart piracy and your invasive practices. You have gained something for being in this MH nano bundle though, an impressive loud and clear indictment of your practices which should serve as a standard by which to measure your future efforts. I wish you the best in regaining the confidence of these thousands of disgruntled customers.

I don't think they lost a lot of customers, it takes two minutes fiddling with the SongGenie demo to realize it's a waste of time.
If I want to go on using Cover Scout and all the covers are written into the files, may I delete the cover folders in Library -> Application Support -> Cover Scout?
My biggest problem with CoverScout is not the fact that it hogs CPU...
it's that every time I "Rebuild Library" with it (I have almost 38K songs), the list of albums does not show me artwork for albums I know already *have* artwork.
And it'll be a different list each time I "Rebuild Library" -- either by using the menu command or by trashing the /Library/Application Support/CoverScout 3 folder (which their tech support recommended.)
Oh, and for some reason CoverScout believes I have 11 more songs than iTunes does.
I don't know if this means my iTunes library has a problem or not...
I haven't had a problem with the server holding all my registrations, including iSale. I did end up purchasing SongGenie, because CoverScout is really crippled without the companion app. I never tried applying the CoverScout license to SongGenie, but it did not show up in my equinux account until purchased, so I think it will be a separate purchase. The gold in this heist is more copies of ripit.
SongGenie is actually a good app. I wish it was a promo. I'd give it a shot now that you have CoverScout.
I request having SongGenie included in the bundle along with CoverScout
If you spam one more thread with this, I'm going to ban you. Buy the app if you want it so badly.

Nope, that's not my problem.
I *think* it's more a question of the program really isn't fast enough -- or programmed well enough.
If I let the program *sit* for a while -- like an hour -- after the library has said it's rebuilt -- then it seems to show most (but not all) of the artwork.
The other problem -- it's search doesn't seem to find anything with a "&" in the title. Like "Flo & Eddie" or "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young", etc...
Ugh. I should have paid attention that CoverScout was an Equinux product. I never used my iSale license because of their installation and activation procedures.
Installing additional software like SongGenie is unacceptable. Equinux products will never again be a consideration on whether I buy a bundle.
I only hope that AppZapper got it all.
I agree with the complaints in this thread. The registration was *far* too complicated to figure out, which means the application is of little use.
Im disappointed to see how much trouble this app has been for many people. I've been using it so far on a fresh Snow Leopard install with no issues.
I have to agree that they should of had a notice about SongGenie being installed as well. All in all it appears that its working for me. As long as I don't see any usability issues with my library I will continue to use it. I may even purchase SongGenie as it appears its cleaning up alot of my old songs.
I would recommend that you backup your iTunes library before trying this out. Since I just did a fresh OS 10.6 install I already have the backups I need just in case.
I have not had any issues so far. Ill keep my eye out.
I didn't have any issues registering it or using it, though I do agree that they should have mentioned that they would be installing SongGenie, as well. SongGenie seems to be useful enough of a program, at least, though a lot of my music is foreign or less mainstream so it can't clean up a lot of it and I don't think that program is worth the price.
All in all, CoverScout is kind of clunky but I didn't have nearly as much trouble as everyone else seems to have had.
Lame.
I haven't read this whole thread, but apart from the oft mentioned ridiculous registration requirements, the search browser crashes constantly.
I have 18k items in my iTunes library on an external drive, and after selecting File -> Move iTunes Covers to Files, CoverScout happily displayed all of my artwork. (I don't have any custom tags so it doesn't really matter if the resulting tags are v1 or whatever). Since then I've been using it to hunt down my missing artwork and it's done a perfectly fine job for me so far. I'm doing it manually over a number of sessions, and at the moment I'm happy with it. Since I already had MacJournal and RapidWeaver, CS was a heavy reason for buying the bundle, and it's certainly been worth the price.
That said about the app, their registration policy is admittedly ridiculous. I gave them a clearly fake address when they inappropriately asked for it, and the necessity of making a useless login to their site so you can attach your code to your login, so the app can access your login to activate itself...that's like, "What?" We use Macs; elegance please! I've also told Little Snitch to stop CS from contacting the mothership at launch, but obviously I have to allow it net access in general, so I don't really know which LS rule is taking priority. The other issues brought up in this thread are also legitimate complaints: installing SongGenie without an opt-in and such.
And it won't be long before I delete the rather excessive 5.45 GB "iTunes Covers" folder in CoverScout's Application Support folder, but that can wait until I've finished the first pass through my library.
It seems to be a pretty good app, hobbled by a protection/registration scheme that makes the company look pretty bad. But it was cheap, so I'm happy.
This app is in my Trash. I have never had such a difficult time getting a bloody app activated. By itself, CoverScout is useless to me since I don't bother about album covers in iTunes but I thought since I'd got it in the bundle I'd give it a go. Not anymore. It goes. Just like iSale went.

if your iTunes library is on an external drive, and/or if you don't let iTunes manage your files, CS won't find iTunes artwork
Wow, that's a rather serious deficiency I've missed. I know many people that do have their library (or a large part of it) elsewhere and who won't let iTunes manage it - including me. Kavasoft's Curator never protested when I tried it so it's possible to have support for it afaik.
Guess that makes CS pretty useless to me then... Huge thank you for letting me know in advance!
Aside from the registration bull, this program keeps crashing and is very slow. I'm testing it on a small section of my library that I have separately on my computer, about 200 songs and I can't get through the list with out a problem.
This and monkey island is why I bought my first macheist bundle. Never again. I thought these apps would be tested.

Very well put, Sir. I agree 100%
It is crap that my home address is needed to register a piece of software that I purchased from a third party
This program was a large part of the reason why I bought the NanoBundle 2. I had no issues activating the software and, while I found the requests for personal information to be a bit much, have no qualms with it otherwise.
The program works well. It isn't perfect, but it makes it very easy to find and add cover artwork to your library.
Its integration with SongGenie is nice, as well. Unfortunately, the license for CoverScout doesn't cover SongGenie - basically, a demo of SongGenie is installed on your system when you install CoverScout. For me, SongGenie would probably be the more valuable of the two.
Unfortunately, I feel that the full price of CoverScout ($40) should have included SongGenie, and thus I won't buy SongGenie separately. Hope to see it included in another MacHeis bundle.
I think I'm going to end up going back to TuneUp or Pollux both apps are very good and do a heck of a lot more.

Did anyone else just get a newsletter from Equinux without signing up for one?
Never got a newsletter. All in all the application served its purpose pretty well, my library looks pretty now, without a lot manual input.
Give us Song Genie and we'll call it even.

I got that newsletter today.
I must admit, I can't remember whether I said they could email me or not, but I must admit as soon as I saw the subject I laughed, deleted the email and went back to sleep.
Apart from all the licensing issues, this app is rather worthless. It is very very slow in scanning my iTunes library, doesn't even see updates to my library most of the time, and generally makes it harder and longer to put covers on my music.
I'm disappointed generally MH software doesn't suck, even if it doesn't do something one needs. This, I fear, just sucks ![]()

This pretty sums up my opinion of this. I don't mind that it installed SongGenie without asking me, as it works really well alongside it. Would have been nice if the license had covered SongGenie too though..

Have you checked your receipt page? There's a list of checkboxes on the side to decide whenever you want to receive emails from the developers.

I did, and the CoverScout checkbox is unchecked.
Just got another one.
At the bottom it says "This newsletter has been sent to you because you downloaded or purchased equinux Software in the past."
Downloaded yes. Signed up for a newsletter no.

It's bad enough when software companies "assume" you want newsletters and you have to tick a checkbox "Not" to receive them.
But to receive newsletters just because you downloaded or purchased software is outrageous.

Hello all.
I have put up a comparison of CoverScout, Pollux, and TuneUp. There are no affiliate tags or anything, so the only benefit I get is any constructive/destructive comments that might flow my way. There is an initial comparison and a follow-up on Pollux and TuneUp. My hope is that others will be able to decide on a product without spending as much time on it as I did.
For those of you who hate CoverScout, but want a utility like it, check out Tagalicious. It works sooooo much better and it can also fill in song info... it is essentially SongGenie and CoverScout with more functionality and it cheaper too. I had a good experience with the trial.....
