I'm having a little trouble getting it to move off the trial. First, it doesn't let you paste the license in there, and when I type it in manually, It still looks like this.... http://grab.by/2NaG

Make sure you are inputting the license correctly including all dashes and that your computer is allowing the application to connect to the internet. Also after inputting your license, try clicking somewhere other than the license field or try hitting the return key.

Give licenses some time. The devs have to play catch-up. Bundles are the times when developers see more activations than any other time. It's a huge amount of load.

I couldn't paste mine at first, for some reason ctrl-click & choosing paste in the contextual menu item seemed to do it for me...

Oops...Guess I posted this in the wrong place before...for posterity...

When I start up Clips (under Snow Leopard) I get a "Failed to initialize the store" error, and not much else.  The app is running, just unusable.

I'm experiencing multiple problems with Clips.
Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

1) I could not paste the license key into the license field on registration, I was forced to type it all out.
2) If the application is running in the background (hidden - but board visible), I can't use the hot keys.
3) I can't get abbreviations to work.
4) The icon won't show up in the menu bar when enabled.
5) I enabled sharing of the clipboard on two MacBook Pros on a network, and neither clip board shows up on the shared clips. (I can confirm that our computers are connected to the network properly)
6) When editing a clip, preview does not work.
7) Clips does not start on login when enabled.

8) I set clips to "Automatically create clips from system clipboard" (desperately needs to be reworded, BTW), Keep 50, and it will only keep 1 at a time.

Due to these bugs, it makes Clips completely unusable for me. Clips was the one piece of software that encouraged me to purchase the MacHeist bundle, but Clips doesn't even work.
Unfortunately, I have to go back to PTH Pasteboard until Conceited Software creates a piece of software that actually works. sad

Found out what my problem is. The entire application falls apart in alternate keyboard layouts. I use Dvorak, and this means that even basic things like copy and pasting don't work in Clips.

I'd strongly recommend you download shareware titles before you buy if you aren't familiar with an app...  One of the benefits of shareware...

Clips doesn't seem to start on login and I can't figure out how to change (or even find!) my preferences. When I open Clips (through the Finder) I just get the little sidebar popping up. I thought I'd asked clips to put an icon in my menu bar when I installed it (the little blue clipboard), but I'm not seeing one. What's going on?

Also, the only thing that's currently in clips is something I copied (apparently, I don't remember) when I was in mail. It displays in a little window when I open clips, but only some of the text is visible. There doesn't seem to be a way to change the size of the window, which is annoying, because I it means I can't actually read the text to figure out what I'd be pasting if I used it. Gah!

Not impressed so far guys.

While this is excellent advice, I would have assumed that a piece of software featured in a MacHeist bundle actually worked, wouldn't you?
I was really looking forward to having Clips be somewhat useful, I really didn't expect it to be completely and hopelessly broken. Hopefully they will get it working with all of the complaints from people, then my license will be useful.

At least I didn't purchase just one app to find out that it doesn't work. MacJournal looks good and I'm looking forward to trying Flow despite having Transmit already. As a web developer, RapidWeaver is a terrible piece of software. smile

Well dreamweaver wasn't really meant for us webdevelopers per say, more of an iWeb, homestead, or frontpage on steroids.

Though Clips would be a good developer tool once they get some additional kinks out of it.

Obviously you are having real problems getting clips to work on your machine/OS but with over 29,000 bundles sold and only a handful of complaints about clips not working, obviously the app isn't "completely and hopelessly broken".  Doesn't mean there aren't bugs or problems that need to be fixed, and it doesn't reduce your frustration at it not working for you (might even increase it), but it must be working for most people.

Can someone suggest alternate shortcuts for pasting 1-5? Mine are system screen capture shortcuts (which are the ones that were set by default) so it's not working. I can see the clips in the UI, but can't paste them?

Try using
Command + Option + 1
Command + Option + 2
Command + Option + 3
Command + Option + 4
Command + Option + 5

or if you want to use something other than numbers, for instance you're on a notebook like me, use letters on the keyboard.

Command + Option + Control + z
Command + Option + Control + x
Command + Option + Control + c
Command + Option + Control + v
Command + Option + Control + b

Hope that helps!

I am unable to get beyond the initial setup assistant screen. It seems to start and then disappears. When open, it seems to hide behind other windows. Sounds like others are having problems getting it going too. I'd like to test it if this gets sorted out.

Hi rambaldi,

I'm just curious how high a priority supporting alternate keyboard layouts is for Clips. Currently, using the Dvorak keyboard layout causes pasting to fail. Attempting to paste triggers an alternate keyboard shortcut.

Would this be a bug that you would plan to fix in a 1.X version, or would this be something that would wait for a 2.X release?

Thanks,
Nate

It just means that... as usual, not every single person is either:
A) Interested in Clips
B) Bothers to post on the boards.
C) Runs 10.6 and Intel, which Clips gloriously fails on.
D) Doesn't notice the huge memory hog, yet may wonder why their computer has slowed down so much.

You won't hear from those people, but it doesn't mean that it's working for them.

Not interested in arguing semantics, and I am not defending the product or saying it is great or that it doesn't have issues/problems, I was just pointing out that it's not really fair to make global damning statements about an application just because it doesn't work for you (or a handful of people), on your particular hardware/OS combo.

And for what it's worth, I can assure you that when people pay for something that they perceive doesn't work, they are not shy about making their dissatisfaction known. In fact, I've found that people will even complain when something they get for FREE doesn't work.

It seems like Clips' default pasting keys should be something different from OSX's default screen capture keys. That's going to confuse people when they repeatedly try to paste something, give up, and later find their desktop covered in screenshots.

Also, is there any way to get Clips to play nice with Typinator? I tried adding Typinator to Clips' exceptions list but everything Typinator does is still appearing in Clips. Perhaps some option to ignore things in the system clipboard that aren't there for more than about half a second (since Typinator immediately restores the previous clipboard contents when it's done)?

Yeah, ditto me with no abbreviations on 10.6.2.  Not found any other probs though.  I'm really disappointed that there is next to no support documentation on the dev website.

I was hoping to use this to sort out my dissertation references, but it looks like I'll have to use Typinator and have permanent shortcuts setup instead.

Clips just doesn't behave itself on my MBP running 10.6.2 - unable to access preferences, keyboard shortcuts don't work, no clips icon... The only way I can use it is to launch the application using Spotlight or Finder - and then it doesn't show the full application window, only the dashboard.

Strangely, I tried installing it on my Mac Pro (also running 10.6.2) and it worked fine, doing exactly what it should do. There is a serious problem with this app somewhere, and it's only affecting some machines - no idea what the criteria for getting a working installation running on your machine is, though.

App crashes when I enable Sharing, which is the main reason I wanted the thing in the first place (I have Launchbar for clipboard histories already).

It's disappointing, but what can you do?  You certainly can't get a response out of the developers, that's for sure.

MacHeist - can you perhaps have a word with them and ask them to get back to their users who are having issues?

BTW, I have a brand spanking new iMac with 10.6.2. This machine is almost as clean as you can get.

+1 on the 'Clips appears to be an epic fail on 10.6 Intel'.

I can access preferences but I can't keep the program running for more than 5 minutes.

I went back to TextExpander because I couldn't keep Clips running.  Clips is a lot prettier and would be great if it was a little stabler, but until I hear of some improvement I'm going to have to stick with my old ways.

What's odd is that some of us on similar systems are getting different issues.  Mine seem to work, except for abbreviations.  To be fair, I quit it and reopened typinator at that point, so I can't say it was thoroughly tested, but it seemed stable for me...I wonder if there's conflicting software/processes?

One of the most buggy pieces of software I've used.  This is saying a lot considering the fact that it hasn't crashed on me yet. Small list of the issues I've seen so far:
* Never saves more than one clipboard item, removes it's primary purpose
* Abbreviations don't work.  I've tried everything, and they just don't work at all.
* After restarting the app, dock icon is missing (despite what pref says) meaning I cannot access the preferences ever again.  You have to trash the pref file to turn it back on and actually change the prefs (and then re-enter reg code)
* Menu icon doesn't show regardless of prefs
* Non-intuitive interface for adding abbreviations

More than 5 bugs in less than 5 minutes (I didn't list them all, just the highlights).  At least I have to give them some credit in that didn't crash on me, but the combination of these bugs removes all the features of the app.  It's not even worth the memory on the hard disk.

P.S. +1 on the 'Clips appears to be an epic fail on 10.6 Intel'.

Having the exact same problems as Highway of Life. Can't believe only a few people have these issues.
- Hot corner not working
- Never seeing full app
- Process running but no icon in dock and never seen an icon in menu bar so far
- Only one clip saved at a time
- Shortcuts not working

In short: useless.

Tried trashing the pref files but cannot get it to behave appropriately. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, which Clips 1.5 should be compatible with.

I like clips, it seems to be working fine for me. However:

I have hidden the menu bar and dock icons, now I can find no way to re-open the settings - I know it told me what keys to press when I applied the setting but I can't for the life of me remember what it was!

Seems a bit of a shame it doesn't make it a bit more obvious!

I've found that running the app again will bring up the overlay, if you hit Cmd + , you'll get the Preferences panel up behind it, then hit escape to close out the overlay and tweak the settings. Found that one out after removing the dock icon and not getting the menu icon I'd checked.

Hope it helps.

I'm on an Intel MBP, 2006 era, running 10.6.2. I have most of the problems previously described... the app starts but then disappears (I can double click the icon to bring up the little side-board still). Can only copy one thing, and preferences seem to be non-existent. Also there is no way to quit the app other than through the terminal. I hope this gets fixed because I'd really like to use this app.
