Very disheartening news and to be honest feel very misled and deceived all the sudden. So glad my wife and I both bought the iphone app now that its free. Wow aren't we a couple of suckers.......

Now now, we don't know anything about the Mac app at this point but yes, I do feel a bit stupid for buying the app TWICE now.

he mislead people for months period and even said so in his little speech that he has been working with twitter on the "outside" for a while now. He's a lying deceitful used car salesman as far as I am concerned. I would say based on the reaction so far from consumers I am not the only one who feels this way. I would also think MacHeist would be a little miffed since his bullshit push of his product was a driving force in nanobundle sales the last couple days and was actually used as quite the hook to bump sales......I mean it was everywhere the last two days of the sale and thousands of bundles were sold because of it.....

I doubt he knows more than anyone else, he is probably just assuming that Twitter bought it just like the rest of us.

Tweetie 1 for mac is outdated and practically worthless in the face of the current and upcoming competition. Loren may not have even been working on v2 in earnest (anyone seen any evidence of it?).

I'm very undecided what to think about this whole move. One the one I like Twitter and I don't think the company is evil. I hope Loren can take the tool further with Twitter in the background.

On the other I'm not happy that I bought it once (or better twice Version 1 -> 2 you know). But seriously, all together it was around 5 [fill in your local currency]. So that didn't ruin me and will not now.

It's another thing with the app for OSX. It's very sad that this is somehow discontinued and that Loren and MH teases us with some super secret exclusive beta baloney and than nothing happens at all. No further information or anything. That is ... well ... unsatisfying

Anyway, I really hope that Tweetie for Mac is not dead but if that is the case I will move on to another client. It's not a big of a deal for me cause I din't bought the nanoBundle for Tweetie even if it was a really good incentive at the time. ;-)

You are right izdale I don't know any specific details, but I am just trying to ensure that Twitter gives is to SOMEBODY, preferably me, so it doesn't die on the vine. Basically, the gist of the announcement is totally mobile oriented and not at all about the Mac, so I assume they may leave Mac alone unless somebody convinces them to pass it along to a Mac developer. Funny how there was no mention of the Mac client by that fraud or twitter and Loren knew that once again he was leaving people in limbo yet failed to mention anything about his promised beta oh go buy the nano bundle so you can beta test uuuummmm yea NOTHING. I don't begrudge anyone success fame or whatever it is you are trying to achieve but when you do it in this fashion you are just a manipulating con artist.

I don't get it
Is the whole company/all apps sold to Twitter or just Tweetie for iPhone?

If they bought all then we might be in a better position as we are nearly 90 000 who have bought Tweetie 2 for Mac. How is your law? Don't the new company have to deliver if there is an agreement to costumers?

gah so does the purchase of iPhone Tweetie mean Twitter now gets to serve us ads through apps we all paid for?

Did anyone else get "hail Twitter" from Loren's blog post? Not to mention, the lack of any kind of note of appreciation for the supporters (us)? I'm not trying to be a debbie downer here, and I'm glad dude made his quick million, but I just can't help but feel swindled... and I hate feeling like I got taken for a ride.

Purchase #2: Tweetie 2
Purchase #3: Nanobundle2 to get access to OS X Tweetie 2

I think you're not the only one on the same boat here…

I bought Tweetie just a week before Tweetie 2 was made known to the world, and I had to buy the "…2" version if I wanted to gain the host of new features.  Fine.

When MH bought added Tweetie for Mac onto the nanoBundle2, I got it on the premise that I'd get access to another "version 2" when the beta was due for release.

And the news comes out from Twitter that they now own atebits and Loren is now part of their payroll…

Honestly, how does that look to everyone?

I am usually very reasonable, but only when it's within reason.  I find it rather disgusting how Loren has not made one statement regarding this so-called "beta" ever since it was announced by MacHeist.  His latest blog post about the acquisition makes no mention of this either, and it's just all about praising (his own) the iPhone client.

Pathetic.

I have no respect for individuals who uphold such mentality.

Does this mean that he's really working on a decent beta or is he just compiling something to fulfill his deal?
I think, the definition of beta is a broad one and I really don't know if there's a common consensus on how flawed it can be in order to be called a beta...
His statement in the other thread reads just like that, "hey I will throw something together quickly in order to shut everyone up"...

My worry is that Twitter won't allow him to develop and release a 2.0 version of Tweetie without it being under the Twitter umbrella. Clauses in contracts are a crazy bitch.

But that's all conjecture on my part because I obviously don't know what Twitter puts in their contracts.

Just putting this one out there...

If you guys are truly upset and really torn up about this...switch to other Twitter clients.

We got Twitterrific as part of a nanobundle.
Kiwi is out there and really nice
Twitterrific is on the iPad and it's easily the best experience as of now.
Echofon is on the Mac and iPhone and they sync (not to mention also as a Firefox extension if you're into that).

There are options. Explore them.

2. Tweetie for Mac will also become free?

1) Based on the post that was linked above from Loren, yes, we will still get the beta.

2) Well, Twitter didn't say anything about the Mac. I'm assuming it'll see 2.0 release and either a) be updated or b) left to die but at least released. Twitter, from what is being seen, has no desire to have their own applications on the desktop, only on mobiles.

I, too, am both thrilled that Tweetie for iPhone will have a bright future, and worried about the future of the Mac app. With the way that most non-compete agreements are written, Loren — as part of Twitter — MAY not be able to continue working on a desktop app while employed there.

Of course, this is all speculation, but my own experiences with these sorts of situations makes me very concerned for Tweetie 2.0 for Mac, and even moreso for a future Tweetie 3.0 for Mac.

That being said, I have absolutely no regrets for purchasing both Tweetie editions when I did (Tweetie for Mac was added to the nanoBundle AFTER I'd purchased, and I owned licenses for both products beforehand, anyway).

No, but I assume by the fact that they announced that they only acquired 'Tweetie for iPhone', they never mentioned mac. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems the best answer.

I don't see how a non-compete agreement would apply. A desktop client doesn't compete with an iPhone client, and Twitter doesn't have an official desktop client yet.

Non-compete agreements can apply to this case, but that's not to say that they do. In a lot of cases, when a developer signs on to a company, they have to sign an agreement that states that anything they make while employed by the said company actually belongs to the company, not the person.

Frankly, I don't actually see Twitter doing that, but it does happen.

Hmm.  It will be interesting to see if we actually get on the beta for longer than a week before they release it for free.  Also, I'm yet another of the people who bought the NanoBundle2 for Tweetie, so while I'm happy Loren is going to make some money, and get Tweetie for iPhone into more hands, I'm not entirely happy with the way the Mac app is playing out.  Sure, I expect I'll get the beta access, but the free upgrade to a free product doesn't sound quite as appealing as it once did.  (And I hope they don't go the ad-supported route in it, cause that would suck extra-hard.)

If I had a vote, which I completely don't, I would vote that they sell it to Daniel Jalkut.  He's taken over apps before, and it's worked out well.

Later,
Blake.

This is so confusing right now. I don't really care if it is becoming free since I didn't even know that it would be part of the bundle when I bought it. I just expect it to be as good as they want us to think it is.

Also, I don't mind to pay for it if it is worth it.

This looks to be a mixed blessing for Mac Twitter client developers in my humble opinion. The fact Tweetie 2 will be free (I assume ad free since there will be no paid version) will make things tough on other paid applications. However, I get the sense that once Tweetie 2 is released into the wild that it won't be actively developed (not that it was all that actively developed before the buy-out by Twitter). I think Twitter is allowing Loren to finish the update so he can fulfill his promises to MacHeist and to the current user base, but I don't think the Mac platform is Twitter's real focus in the least. I'd place good money that after a couple maintenance updates Tweetie for Mac gets very little attention. That should leave the door open for developers of applications like Kiwi and Twitterrific to make headway on the Mac platform.
