Cancelling MacHeist emails due to Boinx spam

I'm not sure you can call this spam, per se - you had the option and the point of purchase to opt out of mailings from the participants in the bundle, so that right there is a two-fold case for calling it legit direct mailing. At this point, it's simple to opt out.

Also, have you tried looking up your MH3 order (http://macheist.com/order/) and unchecking the boxes for the devs you don't want to hear from?

Thanks to the moderators for reminding us how to unsubscribe from particular developers emails in the bundle. I, like the OP, was a little bothered by Boinx' email. I've spent a while trying to figure out exactly why it rubbed me the wrong way and it's still hard to solidify, but I generally feel like if you're going to interrupt me with an email at least respect my time enough to give me good information I felt like this email was nothing but a teaser designed more to bump their twitter follower count than to give me information. They had a line of communication with me via the email (which I've since cutoff), if getting me the information was the important part, they would've put it in the email.
I wouldn't call it spam, I intentionally left that box checked when I ordered. However, this type of email wasn't what I expected when I left that box checked, so I've revised my preferences in light of new information about how Boinx intends to use my email address. I understand that my opinion may not be shared by others (I tend to be overly sensitive toward unwanted email, so I'm guessing I'm in the minority), but that's the beauty of Macheist allowing us to choose those preferences on a developer-by-developer basis and revise the preferences post purchase. When I look up my order with which Boinx was involved. I don't get the checkboxes. I'm also fairly certain that I opted out of all emails except for maybe 1 or 2, of which I'm certain Boinx was not one of those. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain.

It was a spam mail, plain and simple. No information at all, just trolling for Twitter followers.
And so the great white checkbox became unchecked.

Edit: I had it send me the email (from email link, you don't get the opt out stuff), not realizing I could just click the corresponding links on the side. From those, I am able to check the boxes. Boinx was opted out on mine.

Very much so. I told them what I thought of their crap as well.
It seems to me that they expect you to opt out through them, which I find a little disconcerting. I also wonder if they're allowed to do that per the contract with MacHeist.

My first thought when I read that post was "Oh God, the machines are rising up!". I think it might be a mixture of a very long day and too much big bang theory recently.

Oh, I wish I would have read this before I unsubscribed. I wrote my own "no thank you" message.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way about the email.
[s]Now, I actually signed up with MacHeist twice... I don't remember signing up with the second account, but I get emails to two addresses whenever MH does something.
Now, I only ever used one account for ordering the Bundle, but I got an email to both addresses.[/s]
(Sorry, I thought because I was getting two emails I had to accounts, apparently the second account is no longer active? I don't know, it doesn't exist now and the email is unsubscribed.)

It never ceases to amaze me how easily some are bothered. People in the world are starving, and a simple email ruins your day! Wow!

Well, although I agree it's not that big of a deal, nobody said anything about it ruining their day, or being more important than starving people...

Agreed. Also because he put his full name (which almost nobody is going to recognize) before the company name.
When you turn on your iPhone and see "Oliver Breidenbach... You've gotta see this" it just looks like any other spam.

It's a petty argument anyway. Because one thing that is abhorrent isn't happening to you doesn't mean that something else that is happening to you is right or even okay.
It's a MacHeist related issue, and unsurprisingly, it's being discussed on MacHeist. If you want to talk about how terrible it is that people are starving, have no access to clean water, etc etc, you're always free to start your own topic.
But you haven't, because I guess it doesn't matter to you either. As moviegod said, you'd rather complain about how others are complaining about something else you don't care about.

Now that has been said, it's time for me to be a hypocrite.
Let's put this into context. You buy a new cellphone from Verizon, and tell them that you don't want to receive marketing communications. Everything is fine, and the only time you receive communication from Verizon is when your monthly bill is ready.
Then, out of the blue, Samsung/Nokia/HTC/whoever manufactured that cellphone send you a SMS or call you, saying that they're developing a new model and you can only find out more by following a super secret twitter account.
I doubt that people would see that as an acceptable thing, so why should it be any different when you buy software online through a third party?

What's more, deej, is that MacHeist has something in place so that the devs can contact you through them, responsibly.
I've had a number of reports come across me of people saying that they had already unchecked all the email notification options on their order page, so it seems that Boinx, by doing the emailing themselves, are not respecting these options. This is why MacHeist has such a system, to avoid backlash just like this.
The last mailing we got from a ev of a former bundle was done properly, by Ambrosia, on 05 April when they were doing the iPad giveaway promo. Before that they also did a holiday event. Both of these were done through MacHeist and if you didn't have the option checked, you didn't get the mailing.
From what I'm gathering here, Boinx is using their own system. This is the problem.

Oh I know, my comparison to a "real life" situation was more for jfmaddocks.
To be honest, I don't mind receiving the official comms through MacHeist if I choose to allow them, and I don't blame anyone at MH for the email from Boinx. Obviously it is Boinx who have used their own system to circumvent the choices made by MH purchasers.
I just think it's a shame that, once again, it will be MH that is left to deal with the fall out from this.

I tend to agree with Deej here.
I got two of those emails. Since I've done more business with boinx than just through MacHeist, I didn't find getting two emails strange at all. I looked at the contents, decidedd I awsn't interested and Beleted them.
It was a "meh" moment which took much less energy than real spam does (which actually has to be handled).
Now, if people expect to not be entered in a registry of some sorts with the developer of an application they bought, they shouldn't have bought the application in the first place.
Most of the people, if not all of the people, complaining about the Boinx mailing being spam, should really be puttin more time into their tinfoil hats and tinfoil-coated walls. There must be a crack somewhere which they're overlooking...
