Post your thoughts about iClip here.

Yes, we know all you die-hard 'Heisters already have an iClip license from MacHeist 1 way back in 2007, but there are a lot of people here who missed out on both MH1 and the giveaway that MacZot had for iClip at around the same time.

And despite its age and lack of updates, it's a very capable, very pretty app which I've sworn by for years - as a matter of fact, I've used it avidly only up until recently, when I switched to PTH Pasteboard thanks to an offer on MU Promo and Bob Nahasapeemapetilon's glowing reviews of it.

Anyway. Feel free to sound off on iClip here!

Yeah, it should work. I've used it on my MacBook, MacBook Pro, and a Power Mac G4 all without problems. I think it's in the license that you're allowed to use it on multiple machines as long as they're owned by you.

iClip is a pretty neat application. I might find more use for this when I compile google images for photo editing.

Everything works fluid. If I copy a picture, or copy text, the data flows right into iClip. The wonderful feature I like is that when you hover over the appropriate "shutter," your clipboard's preview gets a sweet side bubble that displays your entire contents - usually the full screen image of what you wrote. It's pretty trick. I did keep iClip at the right side of the screen, because that's where it is most useful. iClip also does a great job when I have a Windows virtual machine open. Because Windows is in the Mac environment, anytime I copy text in XP, it goes right over to iClip. So, this is an universal clipboard manager that's easy to use. Great job.

I do, "wag my finger" however at one feature that's not necessarily irritating, but odd (to be fair, I can see why it's done). All menu functions are native to the app itself - much like you'd see on a Windows computer, and not in Leopard's menu bar. When I clicked open iClip from the right side of my monitor, I expected the Leopard's menubar to change from "Finder" to "iClip." Well, it didn't - and I was a little surprised. All preference options are done through iClip's small menubar - which is the first time I've seen this done on the OS X platform tbh.

Otherwise, it is a solid program that has for the most part, a great looking UI, and the clipboard manager works like a charm. Settings are relatively easy to define, although I do wish there was some more documentation regarding all of the individual settings and options. Regardless, it's pretty awesome - and it's something I'll incorporate when managing lots of pictures.

iClip is easily my favorite of all the team prize rewards (I haven't tried the first place reward, iFlicks, since I'm not green, but it's not something I'd probably have used anyway.)  I've been looking for a decent clipboard manager for a while, and have found numerous ones that I didn't quite like enough to buy.  There's a real variety out there.  For whatever reason, I don't think I ever actually tried iClip out until now.  Given some of the comments being made about it, I was really quite surprised how good it is.  In fact it's probably my favorite clipboard manager, period.  It's got a lot of great functionalities that go beyond simple clipboard management.  I also think it's a got really slick GUI.

I would very much like to see it actively developed again (not so much because there's any glaring deficiencies, but as a matter of principle—an app this good should not be abandoned, especially given the lack of equally good alternatives (although a few come somewhat close.)  The one thing that iClip does have some trouble with (as does most of the competition), is pasting into quick entry windows e.g. for apps like OmniFocus or Mental Case.

On the other hand, I love the ability to compose text clips directly into iClip.  Also the ability to edit clips.  Also the ability to paste plain text.  Etc., etc.

Honestly, I don't have any interest in developing it any further. I enjoy working on MacHeist and tap tap tap a zillion times more and there's only so much time in the day.

So technically, it's "abandonware" as far as any new development goes but it's still very actively supported (Mike Lary, who does support for MacHeist also handles iClip support) and still pretty useful in my own, pretty biased opinion.

I'd like to find it a good, new home someday for someone who's interested in acquiring a Mac app. I just don't have the time, nor inclination to shop it around. Maybe it'll show up on johnredslist one day like some pot or something.

Have you considered putting it up for sale? As much as I like iClip the way it is now, it'd be nice to see it in the hands of a developer who could take it further.

Agreed.  I mean I have to respect your choice, @johnred.  You seem to be quite capable of making good decisions as to how you spend your time.  Your current projects appear to be working out ok wink

I would be surprised if no developer was interested in taking iClip off your hands (not that I know about this sort of stuff).  I would just hope that they would do as good a job with it as you did before you put your attention elsewhere.

I use CuteClips and love it. Clean UI and I definitely can recommend it. I haven´t used iclip, though. Stuf is another one that has some nice features (like shared clippings in the same network).

@whitefang - all the prefs options can be changed? I can click the top line of options - Appearance / Hot Keys etc - but I cannot click anything inside those. So this iClip install into a clean SL does not work as I need it to.

On my MacBook iClip works on SL, but on my iMac it no workie.  The difference is that the iMac was a clean build and the MacBook was an upgrade.  Seems that on a new build/machine with SL iClip is not working.  In fact I can't enter my registration code. :'(

Someone PLEASE fix iClip.

IMHO it is disingenuous for the website to still advertise and sell iClip, the website should have a caveat emptor that iClip will not be developed further.

IMHO iClip is still the best clipboard manager out there.  An update to make iClip Snow Leopard compatible would stop many folks (including me) from switching to the competition.  With all the 5 star ratings and rave reviews iClip received I'm surprised there isn't enough economic incentive for John to keep it updated.  I'd gladly pay for a Snow Leopard update, since I last paid for it in 2005.

FWIW: iClip seems to be working on my Snow Leopard (clean installed & migrated Leopard), I had stopped using it on Leopard over a year ago due to focus/interface glitches (the same ones that plagued Leopard's Finder).

My prefs worked - until I checked "Show iClip in the Menu Bar, then they became unresponsive.  You can use Apple's Property List Editor (part of Developer Tools) to change the pref (when iClip isn't running...), look for "Is Status Item Active State" and uncheck it.

My Manage Clip Sets does not lock up, my guess is it's related to the prefs lockup & menu bar item.

FWIW: several apps I use that have menu bar items are having issues in Snow Leopard, even one that just released a Snow Leopard update.  Yet Process Wizard from 2002 works perfectly.

Agreed about the selling. It's still there for sale and it still doesn't work under SL.

But it is the best one, helped hugely with my RSI since I bought it on 30 June 07 and I too would pay for an upgrade.

iClip may have been a good product at one time, but now... well, I'll just leave it at that.

I got Stuf with a recent bundle and it's pretty decent.  Stays out of the way and the developers actually update it from time to time.

Still aching for an update. Switched to CuteClips 3 when I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and missing iClip terribly!  If the devs have no intention of releasing an update on their own, why not GPL it and throw it out to the masses?
