I think he means the website that links to the app. That quilly and the quilly generated in the app seem to randomly alternate between quilly styles.

I agree with Abhimat that Quilly looks a lot like steampunk version of Clippy ![]()
Also something tells me that the true purpose of the app will be revealed later. Perhaps if you take a picture of some object (or a QR code) it will activate a hidden feature, give you a hint for a puzzle or unlock more loot?
Of course I might be wrong and all it does could be adding a quilly on top of a sepia-toned photo, expecting us to tweet and post the results in order to advance MacHeist's viral campaign. In that case it would be incredibly lame.

If I had to guess, I'd say you're probably right.
I also noticed that it shows everything REVERSED (flipped) in the viewfinder. But I realize that it then flips it over when it finally takes a picture.
Interesting though...
Quilly is also on the front page. Take a picture of him swinging there, maybe?
Team Purple forever!

This is what I got...

And we're back!
So let me get this piece MH3 and MH4 together...Steve Jobs traveled back in time to the steampunk "age" using the iPhone as a time machine...now Quilly is holding him hostage and tickling his feet to get him to answer questions?
Brilliant!

I think you've got it!
There goes one and a half years of work on this heist! You've cracked the case!
And we're back!
I've noticed that on some pictures you get an odd vertical interference pattern. Sometimes it covers just part of the image, sometimes the entire image. At times it looks like the vertical lines forms a very crude, 1-bit version of a previous photo. I've isolated, layered and scanned the lines with a variety of interpreters, as yet to no avail.

The Code(?) seems to be generated every time a photo is taken, then (together with a few other filters) merged into the picture.
I took 2 photos and they differ only in the code (and Quilly):

What Background did you take the pictures against to generate that code?
Because most of the time, I see no code, only occasionally.
I took pictures on white backgrounds and black backgrounds, and no code appears
Just once, on the left hand side of this image:

I took a sheet of paper. Here are some other photos I got:

PS:
How do I embed pictures?
If you start at the taptaptap homepage and follow Quilly by clicking him, you get a trail leading to Wikit, Kedisoft, Corel, Macpaw, Numbnotes, Telltale Games and Fuelcollective (seven spiders?) before ending up at www. whosquilly.com -- I also believe that the software will be of use later (23 MB programming code just for putting a drawing on top of sepia tones images is a bit hefty). Maybe its used for some bonus missions.

I also do not see him on the taptaptap page, but Quilly shows up on any photo you take, not just him on the swing of the first page. I also feel like the reversed text means there is a hidden link of some sort. I cannot recreate the code using any of the scenarios above, b&w, paper, shaking, websites. Anyone got a foolproof one that works every time yet?
EDIT: I tried scanning the codes posted earlier with a scanner app, nothing comes up as of yet. It seems like we have to wait, these are modified QR Codes, but a special app is needed to read them.
May the heist be with you.
I too do not see anything quilly-related on the taptaptap site, but I noticed, the camera flipping only appears, when switching the front camera(right switch) on and off again.
edit:
any ideas whether the color of the code(?)-fragments depends on photo behind it?

FOUND SOMETHING!
the app uses the last taken photo for the 'interference':
http://cl.ly/image/3Y1D080U0a3W
Anybody already tweeted a picture out of the Quilly app? Did that help you in any way?
Nothing.
Several people have the interference feature, I do not. My version just overlays Quilly, no codes, no interference, no anything. How bizarre, I'm going to re-download.
May the heist be with you.
The interference only shows up once in a while for me - maybe on every third photo or so. Sometimes it takes up maybe a 5th of the image, other times it stretched across the whole thing.
I stretched the interference on this photo http://cl.ly/image/2b2F3x142F0S and got this http://cl.ly/image/2n3L1R1N1g0w.
Can someone explain how you know that the last photo taken is used for the interference?
Here some examples:
In the top left corner are some CDs visible, which I photographed before:

In this photo you can see the keys of my calculator in the interference (they are round):

I suspect it's too early for this sort of thing. They probably just want to get people signed up and downloading the apps at this point.

I've also havent been able to replicate your steps, but ive found a Huge Quilly on the site of Fuel Collective...
I think this is the first mission!
Two days ago the taptaptap.com site showed a little Quilly in the top right corner, clicking on it brought you to wikit, there was a little Quilly and so on.
Some of them seem to have disappeared, but others are still there:

http://macpaw.com/store -- lower right corner
I suppose, now the Quilly software hase been found, they will disappear.

Maybe this is all just showing us what apps to expect in the heist/bundle, they seem to be disappearing like you said.

I have to agree that this seems to be a preview of the software coming in the heist.
I just checked my loot page, I have a new discount coin for "Agent" so I think that is the bonus of being an iOS User, an extra discount off MacHeist 4.
Mission 1: Completed
Nice work everybody, now let's hope we get Mission 2 soon!
May the heist be with you.

I don't think that the coin has anything to do with finishing the mission. I got the coin about an hour after I downloaded both the MacHeist Agent app and Who's Quilly. I'm pretty sure that there is more to come before this mission is considered complete.
Another interesting thing about the app...rotate the device. For every 90 degrees you rotate, the camera rotates 180 degrees.
Edit: but only the rear facing camera. The front facing camera stays right side up at all times.

How are people getting the coin? After completing the released app?
The coin seems to have appeared after I downloaded the MacHeist Agent and Who's Quilly apps. It might take a little while to process. I'd check back in a few hours, you'll probably have it.
I have 2 coins. One is if you completed "The Heist" game that was released last year. The other is "Agent" for installing the MacHeist Agent app and logging in.
EDIT: A 3rd coin is now showing for the nanomission. So that's 3 possible coins

I completed The Heist when it came out last year and I don't have the coin. I don't recall ever being asked my MacHeist username, though. I guess I'll just redo The Heist to get the coin.
What if you tried opening the app in iExplorer and checking out a few files?
Moderator Edit: No. Don't do it, and don't share it.
Checking some of the pages listed where Quilly is found, he has disappeared from some of the pages.
Wonder where he went?

Why does reverse-engineering the app never wo-o-orrrkk?
I just looked at the files and can conclude for a quick run:
Moderator Edit: Don't go digging around raw assets/source code, and certainly don't share it. You're spoiling the fun.
