You are correct, there is a step that you are missing.  There is more than one thing that you must do to the hex data before you add the colons and decrypt.

Anyone notice that there is a 4d appended to our emails? perhaps adding that to the code...?

I think we all did notice that. And since we know there is something else to do, and adding the 4d is required- I think it might just be an error in the email.
