*sigh* I caved. Even though I said I wouldn't buy it, I did. Yep!, iStabilize, Memory Miner and PulpMotion were all apps I had been looking at recently.
Yeah, yeah, count me in too.
And, well, wow. They just hit 6042 bundles. And to think I doubted they'd even hit 1000.
EDIT: Well, they're up to 7000 and change, now. Joel's promised a "surprise" for us; he's also extended the timer by another 9 or so days.

Nah, there's suppose to be a surprise in addition to the extension. I suspected there would be some sorta surprise but wasn't expecting such a long extension.

does he mean only a surprise to those who already bought it??
The website would imply not, as far as I can see....but maybe!
Doesn't matter to me anyway - I bought it long ago ![]()

Don't know about you all but I'm not impressed with MU. I bought an app through mupromo.com and despite the 30-day trial and the GREAT developer actually contacting MU and trying to help me out, MU never got back to be about a refund. I e-mailed politely numerous times, and any public comments I've posted to MU have been since deleted. I ended up being so impressed with the dev that I told them not to worry about the refund.
Just thought people might want to know that.
30 day trial? Not sure I understand what you're trying to say. What app are you talking about as it sounds like a policy of the developer, not macupdate? I'm not aware of macupdate offering any sort of 30 day anything.

I'm liking this now (I bought ages ago) especially the bit from the e-mail with the code that says :
'Wednesday was a day of rest. Today starts the beginning of Stage 2 in the bundle. To kick off the news, we released the iTunes utility, iWOW, into the bundle for free. Check back each day as we mix things up a bit and make this bundle more of an event.'

I don't get the whole thing with iWOW. Someone once pointed out to me that the plug-in makes the volume louder and if you adjust the overall output of the plug-in to match the standard volume, it doesn't really sound much better.

It makes the audio "fatter" as well (if you set it like that), making my Mac mini actually produce audio that I can listen to without cringing ![]()

Not true. I tried iWOW 1 repeatedly on my laptop and it sounded like crap. I've heard that 2 doesn't improve the audio quality any so I iWOW 2 doesn't exactly "wow" me. ![]()
Of course audio is very subjective so to each their own.

I have to vouch for subjectivity here. When I first tried out iWOW 1.x on my now-dead iBook and on my MBP, the difference was like night and day - until I tried it with iWOW off, and the sound in contrast seemed flatter and muted, which led me to suspect it might just be a volume boosting effect, or just some somewhat underhanded aural trickery á la Bose.
Laptop speakers sound pretty bad no matter how you slice it and even a minor contribution from something like iWOW makes a big difference, so that's probably the reason why so many laptop users vouch for it.

There's a really easy way to see the real effect iWOW has. Lower the input volume until the volume with iWOW on is the same as with iWOW off. Suddenly the big difference disappears.

I like MacUpdate and have purchased some software through them, but none of the bundles. The current bundle is not bad at all, but after trying the programs that I don't have I found that they're of no use to me.
There have been a few comments at MU mentioning givegoodfood2yourmac and they have been deleted. Aquafadas is part of MU's bundle and I see no reason to delete those posts as there's not that much overlap between the 2 offers and people can choose to participate in both.

Er, probably because they don't like people spamming their bundle promo page with posts advertising other people's bundles? Try putting up ads for Burger King in the middle of a McDonalds and see what kind of reaction you get. ![]()

But keep in mind that we don't delete things like this whole thread even though we're in competition with all of them. If they allow comments, they really should leave them all up unless they're inflammatory, IMO.

Personally, I'd say although you've got a right to etc etc it might be against the 'idea' or 'spirit' of this type of forum/community. Particularly when it's not in a context of steering us towards anything heist-related either...
Although, I never read back over my own old posts so I wouldn't notice if you did (I just jump to the latest bit from where I last left off reading...)
Just some thoughts.

Absolutely John. And that's what other sites have done as well, allow comments.
I can see your point rampancy, but I would not consider the comments I read at MU as Spam. For example, some people have asked for specific programs to be included in the bundle, and someone pointed that those programs are a part of givegoodfood2yourmac. For the most part the programs offered at these sites are different.
They were comments by users trying to help other users. Just like here I have read about 1Password and updated my old copy for free and installed DivX Pro.
I've kept coming back, even in the quietest of times, to lurk in these forums specifically because I've found so many good freeware/shareware recommendations here in general conversation.
I agree wholeheartedly with John and the way they handle themselves here at MacHeist. The goal was to make people aware of shareware / indy developers and it succeeded in spades as far as I can tell. I for one have purchased a fair amount of software in the intervening months - mostly indy / shareware ...including 1 or 2 other bundles. (-;
But, nothing, IMHO, comes close to the fun and sheer marketing innovation of the Heist!
Look, don't get me wrong - I think Joel is out of line by deleting and editing threads, and you're definitely at a much higher level than he is for allowing a wider degree of free thought and discussion.
Oh well, I should shut up before I see John editing all of my posts...

Well, I don't like deletions/ edits of forum posts but to be fair the comments section at MU is not really a forum. It's right on the main page, there for every potential buyer to see. Also, right above the comments section they ask to only discuss the apps in the bundle.
Off-topic: Bummed out I just missed the heist
Must pay MH more attention
So long, and Thanks for all the fish!
The comment posted to MacUpdate Promos are asked to be in context with the bundle itself. Outside promotions are out of context. It's MacUpdate's decision to keep thing in context in the same way it's MacHeist's decision to allow out of context forums in MacHeist about another promotion.
It's a bit strange that John would post that to this board, considering we are/were close partners. Any idea why he'd say this and not IM or email me this idea? Just funny I think. ![]()
jennsbl: Who do you think makes people more aware of indie shareware? MacHeist or MacUpdate.
This ought to be a good discussion. ie - know MacUpdate points over 120,000 downloads PER DAY to indie shareware developers.
LS: Thanks for that note. It's true we ask people to keep it in context right next to the form.
I think that all of the shareware deal-of-the-day sites, like MacUpdate and MacZOT, doa great amount of work for software developers. MacHeist does a great thing, too, but the manner in which was decided her involves more of a fun atmosphere with a large bundle at the end while also giving out free trial software during the heists.
I find that MH does it right as I think too many developers have killed their sales and income by participating in all three of the bundle sites.

First, let me say that I wasn't attacking MacUpdate with my comment. I have a membership there, I bought both bundles, etc. I did participate in MacHeist I before I found MacUpdate though.
Secondly, I can't possibly answer that question as I have no actual numbers to compare between the two promos. Having 120,000 downloads doesn't mean that you are introducing indie shareware to that many people a day, let's be fair about that. At least a portion of that has to be people like me who are downloading numerous updates to apps I already have and a new app now and then.
I posted one question re: the current bundle in the comment section and got a snotty reply from another commenter and quickly decided that it wasn't for me. There definitely is a request to stay "on topic" but it doesn't explicitly state that the comments will be moderated (which is when people tend to flip if it's edited or deleted).
MacHeist vs. MU promo... two totally different marketing plans. I think they have both been successful as opposed to all the others that are also-rans. I've gotten a few things from MacZot as well but I'm getting weary of the logging in every day and not really holding out hope that I'll ever win the day's app. d-;
I'm particularly impressed with the delivery of the licenses on the spot with the purchase of the MU bundle, and the quick email with the iWOW license when that was added.
MacHeist and MacUpdate promo & bundles are both making great contributions to the Mac user and dev communities. I don't so much see them as competition for each other as you and John may -- partially because there are enough good apps/devs to go around, it seems. For me, as a user, these two events seem to compliment each other. What I don't get in one I'm pleasantly surprised to find in the other. (-:
I like both but MH makes it so much funnier. These last 2 missions have been outstanding. I am looking forward to the other missions and other MH in the future!
I missed the first MH by several months so I don't know what that one was like. I found MH because of the MU July Promo!

Perhaps you should explicitly state that no posts to other promotions are allowed.
"Context with the bundle" appears to be unrelated to comments being deleted. There are far too many comments unrelated to the bundle and those were never deleted. I stopped reading the comments days ago, but the ones I remember being deleted mentioned other promos and were often made in response to another poster's question.
And some comments were related to the MU Promo as well as outside promos. After all, many apps in your bundle are part of other promos as well.
I love MacUpdate and have purchased quite a bit of software through your site. I have to say that I was very disappointed with the deletion of comments that "dared" to mention other offers. After all, most offers are different enough that people can participate in 3 or 4 offers, including your promo. Post-deletion like that only gives the appearance of censorship, but I guess that's your prerogative.

Exactly.
MacHeist hasn't been without its share of controversy but we've never attempted to censor anything here (except spam and things like when we screw-up and leave the safe gaping open and need to do damage control so that the mission isn't spoiled). We simply have nothing to hide here.
Nor have we stifled any discussion about our rivals. I'm extremely competitive by nature but I welcome all our competitors and find that the best way to deal with them is to try to outdo them both in overall experience and with the software that we offer you.
