hah, themacpak2 sort of happened, called santas stocking. 5 apps, 2 games, $35.00. Per the site "all serials will be received by Dec 15th" yeah...well...it's the 17th and they haven't even released the bundle contents much less a single serial. God they suck. And MAAD seems it'll be a flop again as they haven't touched it in a year, only a splash page that they changed a couple times and now it's nothing. The only bundles that matter are macheist, mupromo, and the mini maczot bundles. No one else seems to be able to do it.

Ahh no Leopard for me yet, so I will stick with testing out Things for now - just got my preview today

Bah, that's silly, there's nothing exclusive about the Things preview. Cultured Code have said that they'll get an alpha out to any who's already expressed interest before Christmas.
I reckon there'll be a few things; keeping up the trend of one thing per day. Whether there will be any more full apps that are actually useful in the long term I don't know, but I hope so!

In my inbox this morning was the invite to the alpha directly from Cultured Code, just below the MacUpdate letter telling me that MU bundle buyers get "exclusive" access to the "beta." If I hadn't been interested enough to request access to the alpha last week I would have tossed MU's email straight into the bit-bucket: to hell with winning/paying for the right to be a beta tester. Please, Directorate, for the love of all that is holy, don't give me a buggy beta turd – or worse, access at a much later date to a buggy beta turd, with a miniscule discount for the final product (Pixelmator, I'm looking at you!) – and try to Jedi Mind Trick (JMT™) me into thinking it's a thing of great worth. I find that insulting beyond belief.
So, to recap, invite from Cultured Code in response to my own request to be an alpha tester: Good! Access to alpha test software as part of a prize bundle from MacUpdate: Bad!

In Joel's defense, you're not paying anything for the Things Preview - you're paying for the core apps in the bundle, plus the unlocked apps. Anything else is icing on the cake. Yeah, I admit I was in error in calling it "exclusive" (and Joel really should clarify this too, otherwise it's being quite misleading), but hey, I signed up for the Things alpha/beta months ago and got nothing from them before today.

Yeah, same here. And you're right, Things Preview and iWow were added as "extras"
and were not a part of the original bundle.
The bundle price is now slowly increasing by the minute.
Obviously trying to draw people off the fence to buy sooner, but seriously? Cheap gimmick in my book, and just turned me off of the bundle. (I was one of those on the fence previously) I bought the last MU Promo bundle, but was still deciding whether the apps in this one were worth it to me.
I see two things wrong with this strategy. Firstly, people on the fence are probably, at least I was, trying to figure out whether or not the bundle is worth it for them. This price hike tips the scales in the wrong direction for the cost-benefit ratio. And secondly, anyone waiting to suggest this to someone as a gift etc. is going to be turned off. I still have a few presents to buy for Christmas, this makes it less likely this will be one for someone on my list.
I wonder whether the increase is capped, at say $60 or so and the increase will stop there, or if it will just continue until the end of the promotion.
Edit: If you're right LRKirsch and it's 1 second for every 86.2 seconds it looks like a final price of $70 if it keeps going till the end.

It did make me reconsider for a second, but I think I'm still going to save my money for the MH bundle next month.

At one point, we actually considered doing something along these lines for our bundle last year but decided that it would've been a really bad idea, ultimately.

I'd have to agree, almost, with the reasoning that the price increase is mainly to spur buyers into "Made up my mind NOW!" frenzy, but I also think it's a fairly good concept, since the bundle now has several $100 more value to it than it did last week, and the devs behind these apps might be seeing some decline in their normal sales due to the extended nature of this sale.
Even if goes up to $80, that's still an AMAZING discount off the price of these apps (still less than buying two at retail, or XMIND by itself).
I, for one, like the fact that the added extras go every single buyer of the bundle, not just the lucky few of us geeky enough to do skunkworks. Although, that was a hell of a lot of fun.
Just tell me the MH bundle MIGHT have a full license for Things, and I'm sitting pretty, and likely to buy that, too ;D.

I'd tend to agree - although they managed a lot in the first week when it looked like there was no chance whatsoever...
I think the price raising is interesting - bear in mind it has only risen a WHOLE $3 so far, but it is the psychology that's interesting - some people (apparently, from their comments) don't like the pressure and 'cheating' that it suggests.
Please don't do it for the MH bundle, simply because those of us who are 6 hours ahead will be slightly worse off!! Looking forward to the MH bundle though...

Ugh. Now that's pretty shameless. Surely Joel's made enough from the bundle sales already to give $10,000 without having to do this.

My other question concerning the hike is whether any of this extra money is going to go to the developers, or whether each of them simply gets a cut based on how many licenses sold, and all this extra will simply pad MUs pocket now. The point is to help the indies right? Seems sort of greedy, especially for this time of year if it's not getting distributed down the chain.
From what I've heard, MacUpdate gives developers a percentage cut, unlike MacZot who pays a flat rate.

I consider MU's $ countdown clever social engineering so long as they don't raise the price on me!

To clarify on MacZot, I'm sure it varies from deal to deal but I've always gotten a percentage of sales the various times I've had my apps involved in their promos.

It's good to hear things from the perspective of another dev who's been with MacZot. FWIW, I got that from reading the "Pinprick" series of posts by John Gruber and the related blog posts he linked to by the developer of Together (neé KIT).

And if the idea is to really help TJ by reaching 15,000, why increase the price of the bundle?
I would be happy to help them reach their 15,000 in order to help TJ, even though I don't need the bundle. But with their price increase "strategy" they can forget about it. It just doesn't feel right to read about helping a person's lungs collapsing, asking people for help, and telling them "if you don't buy the bundle right now, it will get more expensive for you later"

IMO, I think Joel made a huge mistake with the pricing going up. Granted he did add another app, RAGE MapDesign, but that still doesn't fully justify what he did.

The count-up spiked MU sales by 1000+ today. I call it the "Deal Or No Deal" twist. Hope it helps TJ. Good bundle for me because as a recent Mac switcher I didn't have any of those apps.
But MH II is more fun and more creative!
Does anybody know what the final sales figures were and if they made the donation to the sick co-worker?
