I'd say it's quite different. VectorDesigner is more of a free form vector drawing program whereas Omnigraffle is aimed at making diagrams, flowcharts and the like.

In VD you can obviously make everything you can in OG but it'll be more work. The reverse is not true: OG does not have all the flexibility VD (or one of its colleagues) posesses.

Both types of program are very powerful (if implemented well) and this particular case is an absolute bargain I think.

Edit: Great minds etc, hanlonj ;-)

So long, and Thanks for all the fish!

They're two different things.

Omnigraffle is a diagramming program useful for flow charts, system outlines, circuit diagrams, in fact many many things.

VectorDesigner is more of a freeform drawing package - it doesn't have any of the powerful align features, canvases, hierarchies, magnets, etc. that you get in Omnigraffle (you prob wouldn't use it for diagrams in the traditional sense).

Your best bet is to download trials of both and have a play. I have OmniGraffle Pro but still want this for different things.

EDIT: Oops, look likes someone beat me to it!

Omnigraffle is more of a charting program with a bezier drawing function built-in. Vector Designer is primarily a vector drawing program like Illustrator - perfect for charts if you want complete flexibility in what you create. But if all you want is a quick chart Omni might be a better app for you.

A more realistic competitor for Vector Designer is Intaglio but at first look Vector Designer seems a better Illustrator replacement than Intaglio at a similar price - but both only 10% the price of Illustrator.

Hope this helps - a will comment more after playing with Vector Designer more.

No, afraid not. Intaglio claims it does but I found that to be a bit optimistic, as well ;-)

Nope, doesn't seem to (just tried loading one). OmniGraffle can though.

And no idea about templates.

One of Vector Designer advantages is its integration with flickr textures and patterns and iPhoto images. Also, it has a nice bezier implementation but text tool is a little difficult to get a handle on - although early days in learning the app.

I am a long-time illustrator user - first used Illustrator as a beta before release - whoops now I'm showing my age.

You guys are so awesome.  I was just commenting about Inkscape in one of the referral forums, and you go and pull this.  I like Inkscape (since it's free), but it's not native to OS X (you have to run it in X Windows), so there are numerous gotchas and shortcomings.  I bet they'd work great together!

Thanks for adding this application.  I'm anxious to get my hands on it for making icons!  Come on $300,000!

Please consider buying through my link.  I'm a nice guy... really!

After playing with Vector Designer for the last hour, I am really impressed!!

Does many things Illustrator does well and the flickr browser is really great. Check the video tutorials in the help online out to show how to add textures to shapes, inside letters etc.

But has anyone found out how to edit type once it is entered? This has me stumped but is probably staring in the face and can't see it.

Let's get it unlocked!!!

That would see us reach .3M$ for charity pretty swiftly I'd say, seeing the sheer number of people still complaining wink

I was just thinking the same thing.  I only know one other person with a Mac, but I would in a heartbeat pay another $5-$10 to get Notebook unlocked (I don't see me using LaunchBar, but then again, I've never tried it so who knows?  I may love it! tongue)

Seeing this app added this morning (here in Australia) was the best news yet! I've been eyeing it off since I knew of the program and saw the MacWorld pricing of $49.95...

I'm glad I didn't buy "yet"... hopefully it gets unlocked and then I get it for FREE!!!

I would do this without thinking about it as well.  I'll unlock LaunchBar (my sister is going to buy through me) but I know no one else with a Mac.  I would REALLY REALLY like a copy of Notebook and would gladly donate more to get that.  Do the guys running things have a comment on this?

I have always loved the concept, and even when there are a lot of apps that I may never use, there are always enough to make it well worth my while.  This year, though you really outdid yourself by adding to games whose demos I have toyed with, and was really thinking about buying.  Woo Hoo!

Problem is, I bought my package early, and have gotten no e-mail telling me how to register or unlock anything other than the first set of apps.  Snapz Pro is about to quit on me, and I have no idea if I'll ever possess any of the new stuff. So that's a "boo hoo."  If other folks have had this experience in the past, maybe they're waiting until the last minute, so as to not miss out, and they'll put us over the top.  Here's hoping. All, in all, though, it's still a great concept, and I can't wait until next year.

It's still a great idea that I want to strong-arm more of my friends into.

I was curious about how this compares to lineform as well.  I tried out Vector Designer and Lineform briefly earlier this week when I saw Vector Design had won an award.  Lineform seems to be a little more feature rich but not quite as easy to use.  Anyone else had more extensive experience with both?

So, I just played with VectorDesigner and while it seems cool it is severely limited. No EPS import ability and its export ability is limited to raster EPS. Sorry, but who wants a drawing program whose only viable format is SVG?

Don't get me wrong, this whole bundle is much appreciated, but this app is much ado about nothing if its using a format that is so niche it hinders the program.

SVG support is about as clean as it gets - the joy of EPS support is 'which version are we supporting'.    Most every app I use for vector supports SVG, even going back to the several years old now - corel draw 11.

I'm an early buyer, too, but am I angry?  Not a chance.  It started out as 7 apps, then 10 when  the others were unlocked, then others were gradually added so that we now have 14 apps.  I'm happy as hell!  Where else can you get this many great apps for less than $50?  Plus, if you did any of the heists/mini-heists, you have up to almost $300 of additional apps and discounts.  Let me pull out my iota-calc.....so we have almost $800 worth of quality Mac software for less than $50.

And you said you "can't" have notebook??  Sure you can.  There are several folks who have initiated 'contests' or just posted a message to get rid of their copy because they either didn't want it or already had it.  Take a little initiative and jump on that bandwagon.  Or, if you really want NoteBook, take a few bucks you've saved on all these awesome apps and support the developer by getting it straight from them.

Come on folks, be grateful that MH has done such an awesome job.  If I were part of MH and saw nothing but all the bitching and moaning, I might just say "screw it" and not do it anymore.  (Yeah, I know, I wouldn't, but I might be tempted with all the negative comments).  Fortunately, there's a a large contingent of very happy Heisters who realize that they got a great deal from the beginning.  Anything extra is just a nice little cherry on top  smile

I for one wasn't expecting any extra apps. VD is probably very useful app for some. However, I'm Illustrator veteran so I won't be using VD. I would love to see the ability to choose your applications for the bundle. I'm not saying you have to have huge amounts to choose from. Even couple of additional ones would cover it for me. However, I can't complain about it really. Its truly a great bundle anyway!

No criticism of the MacHeist team intended but VectorDesigner is very immature. Having just tried using it for some simple work it's clear it lacks basic features and stability. It rreally feels more like beta software. Its great to see a new product, from a team with some good ideas, get some encouragement and publicity but I hope none of its users intend to produce serious work with it.
